Steel wool or green scotch Brite pad Id use the scotch Brite because it is not steel and yony remove anything from the cylinder walls and then give a good coat of brake fluid or WD-40

Don't use a hone - that's going to produce abrasive particles still on the walls and what doesn't stick falls down into the ring gap where you'll never get it out. Rust particles and general cleaning debris are soft enough to not really matter (excluding sand or similiar) and you'll never 100% keep stuff out of the bore.

When you hone something you have to very thoughally scrub the cylinders out to get all the abrasive off. Can't do that installed.

Scrub pads may have the same issue - some of those are grit/abrasive impergnated.

I'd just a wire wheel in a grinder, drill, air motor, etc.

So here is what the worst cylinder looks like after a little honing and scotch brite. I don’t know if this is gonna work. Looks bad to me.

This is why I recommend always pulling the engine to do studs, you run into an issue like this then you end up pulling the engine anyways. That cylinder looks like it’s pitted pretty bad from the picture but not being able to feel it it’s tough to say on my end. Run your finger nails across the pitting and see if your nail catch on anything. If they do, I’d pull the engine for a proper hone and rering.

My nail doesn’t catch, I just barely can feel where it’s not totally smooth like the rest of the cylinder

Then it’s your call, you can either clean it up as best you can and put it back together or pull the engine and tear into it further

Can anyone tell me what this is, do I need it and if so, where to get one? It was on the back of drivers side cylinder head.

If you install a push button for your glow plugs, you don't even need it. They'll work just fine with it gone. Just ask me how I know.:D
