So yesterday I decided to replace my fast idle sender that controls the fast idle solenoid and the cold advance. Mine has been shutting down long before the engine reaches 120 degrees. I removed the sender from a spare head and cleaned it up then used permatex aviation cement on the threads. My 15/16 socket would not fit so I started grinding the top edage of it. After 7 times grinding it to fit. I finally got a flash lite to look in there and see why it was not fitting. Turns out there was not enough room by the intake manifold so thought about grinding it with my Makita long nose grinder with a small ball burr. Then got the idea to look at the spare head and try to see why I was having so much trouble. I even cut down the hex end and ground down the walls to make the socket fit.. No joy. Well as I'm looking at the spare head I noticed no issues with the sender fit. I finally heard the sound of my head popping out of my back side...
What I had done was removed the over temp sender and not the fast idle sender.. What a big messy I made. So I found I needed a 7/8 socket to remove the sender and it fit fine in the new head. All this took about 2 hours of grinding and fitting. Actually ruined a goof Craftsman socket too. No problem.. I have 3 sets around the shop. I once felt it was a good idea to have a set in each car we have.. Well that never really worked out but at least I have the sets available and finding one of three is much easier than finding one of one. I'm really bad at returning things to a known place but I'm getting better at it...
