Why is my timing so retarded?

If you look again, there is paint pen on that pump which says to me, it probably did not come on this truck or it has been rebuilt at some point. I think the marks the OP pointed out are the factory marks but if the pump has been remaned or is off another truck (i.e. used) those marks are meaningless as to actual timing as has been stated. Eagle eye there may have spotted a timing mark someone made when they put the pump on the truck if you are lucky.... I have no freaking idea how he saw it... but good catch.

that's, chief eagle eye.:D

these "timing marks" will mean nothing because they are made when the ORIGINAL pump is installed at the factory. When these injection pumps are rebuilt they are internally timed differently. Mel at Conestoga Diesel of Pa told us he has no way of setting the timing internally because there are no marks, keys of any way to line things up internally..
No how long have you had this truck? Reason for this question is this injection pump is a wrecking yard pump. Two things tell me this. One is the paint marks on the lower drivers side and two.. the TPS on the drivers side that is not connected to ANYTHING. This pump came off an automatic truck with the E4OD trans.
As for the Kent Moore timing meter looking too complex for you.. You are correct but. They only look like that because they can time 3 different ways any diesel engine. They have a microprocessor in them that breaks down a degree of timing to one tenth. Not a chance your timing light can do that. All you do using a kent moore is clean 2 probe locations. Connect the meter and power it up. Press one rocker switch to preset it. then start engine and rev to 2000 rpm. Now if that's too difficult I can be of no help to you. I have 7 videos on u tube if you want to see how to remove and install a pump or time with the kent moore meters.
BTW I'm not a smart man but I can help like others have helped me.

the Kent moore units are stupid easy to operate.
vs. the ferret adapter and the adjustable timing light.

if youre worried about buying a faulty unit, rent one from icanfixall.

ive bought 4 units, and have good luck with them.

The engine in this truck was replaced by one that was turbocharged and had an automatic. They removed the turbo for some reason. So with that said I dug this picture up apparently there are two set of timing marks.

allow me to reiterate what others have said.

these timing marks don't mean jack squat.

they are a reference only.

I understand they don't mean squat but I don't want to damage my engine driving around if its severely retarded and I don't want to adjust is so the lines meet up for the turbocharged marks and my engine be severely advanced. I'm just curious because this used to be a turbo charged engine and the lines are adjusted for a n/a engine and until I can track down the nessesary tools I don't want to damage my engine

If you would buy a Kent-Moore J 33300 A timing unit, make sure it has the quartz pickup, luminosity probe, magnetic pickup and timing light.

I have ran my engine at -9*, and it ran quite well IMO, @Clb can attest to this.

I was 2 teeth off on my cam/IP gear.

you will not hurt the engine.
as long as you didn't pull the IP gear cover off, it will run, timing adjustment is FUEL TIMING ONLY.
you will not hurt internals, unless you cook them with EGT's

get a pyro.

Seems the original poster has some issues with timng and damaging his engine by timing it wrong. Please do not feel that way.
So this engine came from an automatic truck but it is in a standard trans truck now. Still this pump is a wrecking yard pump. That can be certain. I mentioned in a previous post that the kent moore timing meters are silly easy to use. I have several viedeos on u tube showing many different things about our fuel systems. Here is just one example. You can search u tube under my viedeo title for many more vids.

Good point with the paint pen on the IP. I'm not sure about other wrecking yards, but that is how they mark things which you buy at Pick-n-Pull. So, we can safely say that that IP is a replacement, and that the timing marks have no/very little relevance. The problem with a wrecking yard IP is that you have no idea of it's history. You've got to get a hold of a timing meter if you want to be anywhere closer than in the right ball park. Call Icanfixall and he can walk you through the process.

My IP, btw, has only a single set of timing marks, dead center on top.

Chief Eagle Eye...I like that. Micmac did you say?

the top timing marks do mean something. there's very, very, very good odds that when you properly time the engine, you'll end up with those timing marks so close, that it might be hard to tell that they're not quite lined up and usually the ip mark will just be off to the pass side ever so slightly.approx the width of a dimes thickness,as a general rule.with the lines, matching, you'll probably going to be within 4-6 degrees or so.
anywhere around there and you could run the engine for years without damage.these old gal's are not very fussy.iv set mine from a couple degrees below 8 and couple above and it doesn't change my fuel economy any.if anything iv noticed 6 or 7 BTDC spools the turbo quicker and it pulls easier.
with that said,do however rent Gary's meter.it's good to dial in and have any engine in proper tune.

edit;
oh that's interesting.i didn't know the factory turbo engines got their static timing marks tilted down to the side like that.
no matter however,as the turbo engines and the n/a engines both share the same 8 BTDC (plus or minus 2 degrees) just the same.reguarldless as to where they put a scribe on them.

so i guess this means i probably don't have eagle eyes after all and there is no top center mark? .......dang i would of enjoyed that nickname too.:D

........
lol yeah, though not a Chief,i am seriously a member of the Aroostook band of Micmacs though,Ken.
