Which turbo

I know this has been beaten to death. Ive read that a wastegate has less turbo lag off the line but can cause higher egt's and such at higher rpms. Whereas a non wastegate can produce good power thru the rpm band but has some lag off the line.

Still not sure which i should go with. My truck has one purpose. It pullls my 4000lb samurai rockcrawler to different parks. Some parks are an easy drive on flat highway and some have 8-9% 3 mile long grades. It does fine without a turbo on the flat stuff. Altho with the 4.10 gears and the zf-5 the mileage is nothing to brag about. I just want to know whats best for the long grades, my truck sees 3200rpms in 3rd doing 45 mph at the top of the steepest longest hill i encounter. I want to be able to do that 45-50mph at a lower rpm.

I will be running a moose pump as soon as i get the turbo.

A friend bought a 92 F250 7.3L IDI that had an ATS turbo on it. The way that was set up by 'whoom ever', it seems decent. Unfortunately, he has not done any towing w/ it yet. But, when we took it on a road trip, it was able to keep up at 65-70MPH w/out shifting out of OD (E4OD tranny). We hauled back about a ton or so of stuff and it still maintained freeway speeds. He has a 3.73 ratio.

Now I have a 90 E350 Club Wagon 7.3L IDI w/ no turbo (yet- looking at a Hypermax unit). On the same road, just hauling itself, the tranny downshifted out of OD more then once on the same hills. Granted, I have a 3.54LS vs his 3.73.

You are right that a turbo will help. But the load you are mentioning seems very light. I highly doubt that if you were to put a turbo, you would see excessive EGs unless you were pushing it up the hill at major speed.

Each has its own benefit and value. Both systems have been proven to work. Both systems are used on commercial truck engines. Heck, I was told that my other van, a 99 E350 Club Wagon, the Power Stroke in that one has a non waist gated turbo while the trucks do...

It doesn't' sound like you are going to be doing quarter mile races w/ your truck. So the off the start power most likely isn't an issue. So that would point to the non waist gated turbo. I ask you, how much are you willing to spend? Will you want new? Or will you look for a used unit? Usually those factors tend to determine what someone ends up with (sometimes).

Either turbo system will work. I'm sure you will end up getting guages to monitor the EGs, boost, etc. Heck, you could always get an intercooler too .

i wanted a wastegate turbo for off the line boost. that was one thing that bugged me with my 03 6.0. i know that the idi and 6.0 are different animals.

If you put a Moose Pump on, you can get wastegate like performance with a non-Wastegated. A wastegated turbo on the other hand, with a Moose Pump, it's like the turbo was spinning before you started the engine. A wastegated jobby will definitely help with the smoke control. Your going to lay some coal with the non-wastegated. Perhaps this will help you decide.

Which will make the most power on the 9% when i cant hit it fast at the bottom. Thats the only thing i hate about my truck as it is right now. If i cant hit the 9% grade with speed at the bottom i barely make it to the top without revving the crap out of it. I want to be able to hammer down halfway up and something happen instead of loud noise.

Can you explain why the wastgegated will help smoke control, im guessing its because with the wastegate, boost comes on sooner and thus uses the fuel sooner.

Does a wastegated turbo run out of power, but a non wastegate just keeps building. I read that somewhere and was curious if it was true.
