My 7.3 is almost impossible to start some mornings it will eventually start and try to die out and smoke like crazy for a few minutes till it clears out and then it will be fine the rest of the day. It`s almost like an injector is leaking and flooding it out but I don`t think that is happening because it would start and run on the other cylinders if that were the case. Once it starts it will run great for the rest of the day but the next morning I am back at it again. I need to get it fixed before I burn up the starter. thanks Skip

Contact typ4 for a fuel return line kit. Easy to do, cheap, and most of the times fixes these problems.

yup, get return lines, check for leaks elswhere in fuel system, possibly a bad lift pump. But do the returns first and see what happens. Very common issue

Well I have a set of return lines on the way and I also bought a carrier pump. My question is can I keep my old lift pump and use the Carrier pump at the same time or do I need to replace the lift pump also. I doubt it is bad but will a Carrier pump pump fuel through a bad lift pump

Delete the lift pump. I believe you will push fuel into your crankcase if you run both...which is no good. A Big block chevy lift pump block off plate should bolt right on.

You have to do away with the mechanical lift pump when installing an electric pump, you will rupture the diaphram in it and pump fuel into the crankcase, bad scene.

Check your Hi idle solenoid and your Cold advance solenoid on the IP, if the Cold advance is working and the Hi idle is not, then your advanced to far on a cold start, that is if your IP timing is set correct. Remove the lift pump and block the hole off with a plate you can get at any auto store, ask for a plate they use on the chevys to do that. Are your Glow plugs working?

mines like this to....i dont think its that hard to start though, but if i let it sit for about two hours in the cold it will give a bit of trouble again...but if its warm (within 30 mins of shutting it down) itll fire up like my dads diesel does in summer (right away).

I have a ? about the high idle our trucks have, my truck idles pretty rough for the first couple minutes (shakes cab, and the rusted out fender moves quite a bit, it also sounds rough) and then it smooths out and runs nicely, is that the hi idle? I cant tell by the tach b/c its always at 0 when im idling.

Does your WTS light stay on for 10-15 seconds on a cold start. if not you prolly have some or all bad gp's. Test light with lead end on the pos. battery terminal, Key OFF, probe each GP, if you get a light GP OK, no Light, bad GP.

my light stays on for about 15 or 20 sec so all I have to do is check the g/p for continuity through it kind of like it was a water heater element

You can but I think it is better to do it the way Oldbull is telling you, use 12 volt electricity from the battery to the Gps
