late 99-'00 is what you want. they have the forged rods. i think they switched to the crappy rods in 01.

i have the early '99 and it's is a PITA but i got it for a decent price.

Gasser superduty is the best candidate for a cummins swap or an IDI. You already have the correct gas pedal and cruise control and if you drop in a PSD you have to change all that stuff.

I'd go with the IDI. If you would put a turbo on my 6.9 IDI, it would have alot more snot than my ["96"] 7.3PSD has. Even with the suposed turbo upgrade and the superchip. Even though the 6.9 has 285's, and the 7.3 has 315's [tire's that is], the 6.9 difenitaly has more grunt. No question about it!!! Both my 6.9 and the 7.3 get around 18 - 20 mpg. Not to bad considering the 7.3 truck is almost a grand more weight, being crew cab and all!

Really and truely depends on what you are looking for. If you want to play with horsepower and you think you'll be tickling that 400 hp mark then you want a model with the forged rods and as has been mentioned you need to stay with a 2000 or older.

If all you want is a good clean PSD then the obvious choice would be to find the cleanest, lowest mileage, tightest 2003 w/7.3L you can get your hands on.

You can reasonably expect to get between 15 and 17 mpg depending on configuration of the truck you buy.

I worded wrong.Changing truck not engine.

Yeah we know, its just that if you wanted to, you right there have the perfect setup to swap in a Cummins or IDI. It would only cost a couple grand, and you would keep your truck, but it would be an oilburner.

I had an '03 Super Duty gasser that I seriously considered a Cummins swap. But I traded it in on a car for my wife and bought an OBS PSD. Mileage SUCKED with the gasser...

Keep in mind a '99 - '03 SD Power Stroke gets about 15 to 17 mpg tops. My '97 cc sb 4x4 gets 21 on the freeway. The Old Body Style trucks typically get better mileage...

How much would the cost be to swap a gas truck to a cummins? If it would be cheaper than buying a new truck I might start looking for a gasser to do the swap with.
