thats called your "high idle solenoid"

it increases your RPMs at cold temps until it gets warm, then it shuts off.

think of it like a choke on a gasser

Its just as said already.. Now the not so nice news. You need to slightly press down on the throttle pedl to make this solenoid work. This sad solenoid is very weak and can burn up then it tries to press open the throttle to fast idle during warm ups. Another said Ford engineering bad idea. Flip down the drivers side shade above the windshield and read how to start these trucks. It will help. Now whats not written up there is the time delay we are supposed to give the fuel filter heater before we start the engine. Its something like 7 or 8 minutes to warm up the fuel!!!;Really:angel: Not anyone I know allows that much time before twisting the ignition key to start. Now on top of all this the fuel heater is ON TOP of the fuel its trying to heat up. Now who is that working... So far there is nothing conclusive telling us we need the heter working. Many owners have deleted theirs because they leak out the top often.

Wow, interesting. The only reason I discovered this is because I lightly tapped the throttle and the idle sounded a bit high. Then I saw the solenoid stuck open. Now I understand.

7 to 8 minutes is a long time!

You can also wire it to a toggle switch to have high idle on demand - to get extra power from an alternator or something else. Just like a fancy new truck!

Gary,

I believe Ford/IH has finally decided they do not need a fuel heater. Even up to the early 6.0PSD's there was a heater in the HFCM (Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module - Which is the fuel pump, primary fuel filter, water separator, water in fuel sensor and fuel heater). In the later 6.0PSD's and the replacement HFCM's the heater was completely eliminated. Mine has been unhooked for several years now, and I have not seen a difference....

Now if these actually heated the fuel in the tank like they do in a Big Truck, I could see some benefit to keep stuff from gelling...... but the tiny amount of fuel that would be heated at any one time..... I don't think matters.....

That Hi Idle Solenoid your asking about, is energized by a temp switch on the pass side head under the Alternator, until the head reaches 120*F, the switch also energizes the Cold Advance Solenoid on the IP, it moves the lever on the side of the IP.

Good additional point Bill. If a person was to install a switch to raise the idle it as you mentioned. Is going to change the timing. so if someone does use this do not leave it on all the time. That adds way too much advance.

Or you can use a diode to activate only the high idle solenoid and not the timing advance. If you google it there are more detailed instructions around.

Is the timing advance actually needed for anything?

On a healthy engine with good injectors and timing ,no......but it does help keep the advance piston free, by moving farther than it does in normal operation.
