So after we fixed up my 86 6.9 / C6, we drove it out to California for a wedding, we were going to have a diesel specialist shop replace the injection pump while we were there because felt like it was starting to struggle, they charged us $1700 and had the truck for a couple days before calling us to let us know they were able to repair our “vacuum pump” and it will only be $300 and they refunded our $1400. We were happy to save the money, we picked the truck up around midnight after the wedding to start driving home. Immediately I was experiencing shifting issues, shifting at 3000+ RPM sometimes higher. I quickly assumed someone had tightened the modulator causing the high shift points, we drove it home and brought it to our friends at AAMCO, our friend Brandon is very familiar with the older diesels and helps us, he discovered that the spring inside of our VRV had been grossly overstretched, rendering it in-op. He attempted to order a replacement but no luck (I couldn’t find one either) I bought a spare 6.9 that originally came from an automatic but was swapped into a manual prior, my wife found a guy in California that has a long waiting list to send you the one he makes, as well as sending it to him to repair it. Not really sure how to feel about this, it seems pretty clear that while the diesel shop in CA was attempting to remove my old injection pump, they unscrewed the spring cap and pulled it out of form not knowing what it was? And then attempted to just shove it back together and charge me $300? So we are going to try to have the guy in CA who’s been making these, help us out, but still not sure how to treat the Diesel Specialist shop in Lincoln, CA? **** happens, but this is painful.

For one thing, be extremely thankful they didn't replace the pump and did refund $1400. VRV can be found.

The vrv is the small vacuum module on the side of the ip, right?

I recently swapped to zf5 from c6 and it's still on my ip, because im lazy.

pm me your address and I'll pull it and drop it in the mail for you.

And there you go, good price from fellow member. As far as dealing with the shop, just be glad you didnt get taken for more.

My RV's C6 acts different from my than my mostly identical F250 (see sig). It may be hard seals someone here suggested. I tried swapping the VRV from my F250 and it made no difference. I also bought a new vac modulator for the trans itself that's adjustable, also no difference. As long as it continues to shift to all 3 gears without being harsh, I can live with it. I suspect it has actually been adjusted to shift at higher speeds (2nd=25, 3rd=around 35-40) somewhere on the trans other than the VRV or regulator valve on the trans itself, because it's so big and if you lead foot it from a stop, you can see how it's not that bad of shift points.

Someone on here took a Chevy VRV and swapped the top of it onto his NLA Ford VRV. There's a big thread over on ford-trucks about these which I think Nick (the rebuilder) was part of.
