I have a Dorman one from O'Reilly bought in 2017 and it's still doing ok.

Looks like something came loose inside the pump and smashed the heck out of the inside of it.

Did you use a power steering puller on the pulley, or something else?

Did you make sure there was oil in it?
No sir, I didn't. I'll certainly look for a plug/place to check oil on the next one.

What weight oil is recommended...googlefu ain't helping me here.

I used a puller...Sam one I've been using for years..

What's odd is that the bearing(s) seem alright.
I guess I'll open it up...see what happened in there.

That looks a lot like the Dorman logo on that pump to me. Even if it was in a NAPA box.

Still, yeah 5 days, I'd be a little upset and they'd get a few choice words if they gave me any trouble swapping it out.

I know the men a local NAPA pretty well (right?) so I probably won't give them too much trouble.
They WILL, however, have to make this right.

The pump went T/U about 300 miles from home and I'm not back yet.

PSA:. Make sure that your "brakes" light is in good order.
I nearly ruined the driver seat when I realized that I had no brake assist.

Not sure on the oil. All it is doing is lubing the diaphragm to "lobe" (don't know exactly how is is set up in there) and maybe the bearing. I would put something like 30 weight, or maybe some left over 15w-40..... it just needs to be fluid and slick in an application like this.

If you did not use a power steering puller on the pulley, use on this time. You can damage the pulley and pump trying to press it off or on to the pump if you do it another way. Cubey has a puller set from NAPA he likes, so buy it there if you do not have one.

I used the same (way too expensive) puller & installer that I've used successfully for years.
Thank you though.

Yeah, I noticed after my posting my comment. But, that's why warranty is a thing. Problems can happen in manufacturing.

It's not "way too expensive" vs paying a shop. I've used the kit on vac pumps twice (once each for F250 and RV) and once for the RV's power steering pump. It has more than paid for itself several times over.

I use mine too. And I'm grateful to have it.

I just meant that I got a "fancy" puller/installer kit.
I've never use anything but the puller and the 3/8 installer (which is basically a bolt, nut and a couple of washers).

Here again! I'm finally off of work for a minute,

18K mile Cardone (re-man) fail. It's only pulling 10-12 inches at idle.

The Cardone, from O"Reilly's, is no longer available. I haven't found a replacement from local parts stores...So, I ask you:

1. Does the "pod" from later model ('97 PSD) vac. pump really bolt up to the 7.3 IDI pump drive assembly?

2. If so, did (how) you manipulate the vacuum port to point the right way?

Thank you, in advance,
Kizer
