I have determined that my stiff brakes are due to a bad vac pump. Tomorrow, I will be posting to say that I was wrong. In the mean time, are there any tricks I should know when it comes to changing this out? I plan on picking up a new serpentine belt at lunch, and swapping the pump out right after work. I haven't looked real close yet, but it looks like it's just a few bolts, and the hose. Pretty simple. What about the pully? If memory serves, I have to take it off and put it on the new pump. Any specific tools required for that? I remember seeing something on the Cardon website about swapping out the pully correctly, but I don't rememember it giving any specific helpfull instructions.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes there is a specific way to remove and install the pulley. Firstly you need a special puller called a power steering pump pulley puller. It actually clamps around the small lip just down in front of the pulley.... Don't try to use a puller of the outside edge of the pulley where the belt rides. That will ruin the pulley. KD tools sells a great pulley tool kit. I have one plus I keep it and a spare pulley and pump behind my rear seat. With hydroboost the vacuum pump only runs the ac and cruise control but I use both of those all the time. This pulley is usually very tight but it will come off the vacuum shaft. The three bolts that hold the pump to the mount are easy to reach after the pulley is removed.

Mark,

Also, check the new one.... I have read on here that some of the new ones do not have oil in them. There is a plug on the side opposite the pully.

If you need help I'm in terre haute at school.

Wow, I didn't know anyone on here was that close. Hopefully everything will go okay. I picked up the puller at lunch. Car Quest had one for sale for $47. That's about $15 more than rock auto, but I have it today, and I didn't have to pay shipping. I could have "borrowed" one from Autozone or Oreily's, but I've used their rental tools before and they are always worn out junk.

What are the odds that the pully is going to be siezed/rusted?

it will come off, also i have found it easier to remove the pump first, put it in a vice then remove the pulley.

If your vacuum pump does not had the belt shield on it then you can easily remove it from the motor and replace it on the bench but... If you have the belt shield or guide its going to make the repair tuff... You will know whats going on when you start to remove it..... Post back for any questions too... Plenty of help offered all the time here...:D

I pulled it off both ways. It's easier to remove the pulley first. It gives much better access to the bolts that way and then you can put a 10mm socket on them. When removing the pulley first, it's best to line the larger gap in the fan blades up with the pulley to give yourself more room to work, but it's not absolutely required. One more process that I can say that I read about and then went out and learned the fine points of in the drive way ;)

Thanks guys!
