Is this unit going to work on my zf-5?

How difficult is it to rebuild one of this?

I already asked the seller what tranny did it come out of.

Thank You.

Nope.. Wont work for you but it will for me. I'll be driving down there tomorrow and buying it for myself.:backoff :moon: No, not really. That system is really easy to overhaul. Its just bearings and no friction plates like the GV units. You will need the electrical parts to cause it to shift. It works on every gear forwards. Unlike the GV that needs hydraulic pressure built up to shift it. Not a bad price at this time either....:D

Also works in reverse, unlike the GV. No big gearing gain in reverse as an overdrive, but you do not have to worry about damaging it in reverse. Now if were an underdrive gearing advantage does exist for backing up hills.

Ok so this is not for a zf-5? If yes, Is USG as helpful as GV when it comes to sell the parts You need to complete the kit and what parts are they besides the already mentioned electrical.

Thank You.

If you look closely at the photo you will see that it is a DNE-2 and not a US Gear. Unfortunately the DNE-2 uses bushings instead of bearings, so there can be a wear issue.

I called tech support at US Gear onetime and asked them about using one of their units with the ZF-5, the answer was yes on a 4-wheel drive and no on the 2-wheel drive version.

US Gear does offer help and some parts for the DNE-2, they bought the design from Doug Nash Engineering when DNE closed.

While stating that GV's do have limitations, don't forget so does the US Gear. You can't shift it under power. And while the GV may sound on paper like it is the weaker of the two, in actual use they are pretty tough. I accidentally took the Lady Moose out of OD the other day without the clutch on decel, and I was more worried about my lucky mod bolts shearing off then the GV complaining.

As far as shifting under power with the US Gear unit, all that is required is to push the USG shift button, wait ~ 2 sec and lift your accel foot and reapply the accel. Pretty much like shifting the ole handshaker.

But, not to argue, all things have adv & disadv. I have decided on the USG unit because I want the underdrive unit for towing, in forward & reverse, at crawl speed in some very steep inclines I have at home. The GV cant accomplish what I want to do.

Yall may say underdive??!! Well, if I ever get my 19.5 wheel conversion done, I will have a final drive ratio of 2.61 or better vs the 2.91 stock OD. This will be with the USG UD installed.

Why would this be?

The T-19 and the ZF-5 4x4 model both use the same transfer case, but I have read on this site and the other one that the 2-wheel and 4-wheel ZF-5s are different.

The guy from US Gear said that there was a gear in the tail-shaft or that there was something that held a gear, but he was certain that it would not work.

If you find out that this information is wrong, please let me know as I would love to change my 8-speed for a 10-speed.

The ZF difference comes in the rear housing. There is no provision for mounting a TC on the 2wd ZF. I can post pics later. The output shafts are different too. 2wd uses a threaded end to secure the yoke, the 4wd only has splines.

US Gear now lists a unit for 2WD ZF-5. Don't know how this works for the DNE unit though.

Another thing, I think the USgear goes inbetween the T-Case and tranny so you will have to do away with your front tank since the T-Case will be furthur back. The GV units bolt on to the back of the T-case leaving your front tank, if you have the BW Case like I got (I cant remember the model for our trucks, someone help me out) there is no provision to bolt something up so it replaces the whole rear casing, I called about the adapter awhile back when I thought I had fond a "deal" and that adapter is $750!! All said it would be cheaper to buy new for me unless I found a used kit off the same truck with the same T-Case.
