The flexplate to crankshaft bolts snapped. Every one of them. Gruss is trying to pick out the pieces from the bolt holes, and Barney and I presume Rob are driving around looking for replacement bolts. These bolts are special, and have a unique thread and shoulder design. Anybody near them have any? They have purchased grade 8 bolts at NAPA in hopes that such a substitute may at least get them home.

I do have those bolts somewhere, but I am in Oregon and those bolts are in a big bin of random bolts. Doh! I'm no help...

Barney's truck is fixed and he's on his way back to the campground. turned out to be all 9 flywheel mounting bolts sheared. more later.

the theory is that the bolts were reused too many times and being grade 8 the multiple retorques fatigued them and they failed. note to self do not re use bolts for stuff like flywheels and head gaskets.

What damage did this do to the crank mating face? Tell me you did seal the threads on those bolts... I'm happy seeing those stainless steel freeze plugs in place. I found out improperly installed brass plugs wont stay in longer than 5200 miles.....

the crank was galled up pretty badly. Russ ground it back down smooth with various grinders on hand.

yes we used Locktite blue on the bolts.

Ok I'm back home and with cell coverage finally. (new phone not set up correctly for out of state use). Like Rob said Barney's truck is alive and well. He hooked up the camper around noon today and was headed west. We should hear from him I guess around 6 pm or so. Yes the crank face was gulled very bad, but luckly the metal from the flywheel welded itself to the crank face. I just had to grind away the metal that was not supposed to be there.

Not sure the the "correct" bolts are the ones that broke. They appeard to be the same as the grade 8 bolts we got to replace them. Definatly a wierd occorance. But Luckly, everything we had to do went smoothly. Rob has a very good friend with a really nice shop. I was under the truck asking for odd tools(grinding disks, dental picks,cold chisels, center punches left handed drill bits) and with every request, Adam responded with "What size? what grit? what type?" What a great way to work. SO a MAJOR ATTA BOY to Rob's friend Adam, who opened up his garage to a bunch of guys he didn't know and let then have at his shop. THANKS Adam!!!

Also An ATTA BOY! to Rob for driving Barney and his family down to Lisbon to get the parts they needed (returning around 1 am Sat morning) Only to be back at the campground at 9 am Saturday with a trailer to haul Barneys truck to the garage. Well Done Rob

OH BTW Barneys twin turbo set up is sweet. I said earlier, I couldn't wait to see his truck, but this weekend I saw just a little too much of it.

We made it home slightly stressed. We decided to forego the turnpike for a shorter "easier" route. We took 303 to 271 to 71 to 30. We pulled probably 12 hills that were far longer and steeper than the biggest we faced on Friday on the turnpike.

Everything went well until I got to the flat lands, then we started having cooling system issues. We drove the last half at 50 mph because anything faster put us at 235 deg.

Arg! How much of a problem was the plumbing in terms of getting the trans off? How many hours would you say you had to put into it? Did you get to relax at all? Not much of a camping weekend I'm sure. Sometimes the bear eats you.

Time line... I guess we got to the garage by 11 am Sat. (Robs day started at least 8 am). Had the turbo(Frame mounted one) and the tranny on the floor by 12:30. Rob and Barney went for bolts while my friend Denzel and I removed the broken bolts out of the crank. Ate some pizza, then started the 2nd side of the job. I ground the crank smooth,(While rob and Barney replaced a tight U-joint) then Barney installed the flex plate and flywheel, AND TORQUED the bolts (per Dog catchers phone call via Darrin Tosh) We all got involved in reinstalling the tranny. Then Barney and myself put the turbo back in while Rob ran for some more tranny fluid to replace what we were laying in on the floor. Put the rear end up on jack stands so the rear could spin with no load on it. Topped off the fluid, put it on the ground. Barney took it for a test drive. Cleaned up the tools, washed up a little. Headed back to campground by 5 PM. Cleaned up again, waited for wemens to return from ameusment park. Started fire, made some hotdogs and smores. Talked about SOMEONES new people hauler then off to bed around 1 am.
