Just got done putting on heads, and injector pump, then I tried turning the motor by hand. I was using a 12" breaker and a 1 2" inch piece of pipe. I can not budge the motor. Sould it be this hard, need advice.
I have taken the glow plugs out loosened the injector fuel lies and will squirt a goodly amount of PB Blaster into each cylinder. The motor was running when I parked in my driveway and then I pulled the motor. Issue was a blown head gasket and it was blowing a lot of coolant out of two cylinders. There was water in the back two cylinders on the right side when I took the heads off. Probably rusted just enough to seized.
Lets hope there wasn't water hidden anywhere, water you missed. If there was, and it went into the cylinders, you may be hydrolocked. That's something you want to avoid.
How long did the water stand in those two cylinders you mentioned?
(Hydrolock occurs when a volume of liquid greater than the volume of the cylinder at its minimum (end of the piston's stroke) enters the cylinder. Since liquids are nearly incompressible the piston cannot complete its travel; either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure must occur. )
This did not happen there was at most two tablespoon e of water in the back cylinder and a sports in the next one over.
The IDI has just a few thousandth between the piston and the head. The piston actually comes above the deck at TDC. I think it’s something like 4 or 5 thousands at TDC
It depends what head gasket was used, but piston height above deck should be .010-.031"
Valve head recession to deck surface should be .042-.054 on the intake and .046-.058 on the exhaust. The play-do method should be used to check piston to valve clearance when using an aftermarket cam. Were the heads surfaced and if so how much? Could there be water in the cylinders?
Did it turn over before the heads were installed? If the answer is yes then I would suspect mechanical interference somewhere. If it did not turn over with the heads off possibly the pistons have seized in there bores from corrosion in the cylinders that had water in them.
OK that worked, MOTOR IS FREE, and it turns easily. had to give it every thing I had and I am sure I will feel it tomorrow. On a side note a guy on YouTube used Marvel Mystery oil to free up his motor. He said motor oil did not. And he added to be sure all the oil or most is gone before putting the glow plugs back in as the oil would cause some damage.
