You may want to consider the condition of the injectors until proven good
also. Any idea of the miles on the truck or history of it mechanically?
Is the compression up to specs? ('specs' factory wise are pretty tolerant...)

well remans dont really mean much but they are new injectors (newely rebuilt)lol. they probley dont have 300miles on them if i had to guess. i did a compression test on it after i did the head gaskets and each cylender avaraged 400 to 410. i did do a little tinkering on it after i got home from work and found that the advance solenoid wasnt working. i took the cover off the ip and found that it wasnt grounded the the cover. everything is working now (and i know pay close attention when i put it back together cause it could cause a runaway engine with no way to kill it). matter of fact is there a picture to show how the arm is supposed to fit in the ip, dont want to toast the engine.

OK. Sounds like you are doing your homework. I've turned up the IP on my '86
6.9 about 1/2 turn from the stock position. That is because it has the '94 ats
turbo and system on it, borrowed from a '94 7.3 that presently hasn't a truck
to live in. At petal to the metal it just gets light smoke and +/- 12lbs boost.

With a properly running system a turned up pump should be transparent, only
when your foot pushes far enough do you get the 'turned up' fuel. Mine still
runs along at 18-19mpg when I'm rolling at 55-65 w/3lbs boost.

Timing without a meter is pretty much a shot in the dark, and a potential waste of time. Having timed dozens of trucks if not a hundred by now, I can tell you the difference a degree or two can make. If you say your changing the timing, and smoke is not effected, then your not changing the timing! A worn pump with short cam lobes will not respond to timing changes nearly as much as a fresh pump either, so maybe your pump is not up to the task.
