Truck started whining , can't find the problem.

1994 idit, e4od, 4x4 .

It started whining one day on my way home. I have been trying to figure it out but have had zero luck. It doesn't sound like wheel bearings or brakes. It's not a screeching / nails on chalkboard sound. It's more of a whine. It is intermittent. It usually happens after I've been driving at highway speeds for a little while. It stops when I come to a stop. It sounds like it's coming from the trans or maybe the turbo.

I was thinking maybe the turbo is starving of oil at highway speeds ... It doesn't always do it but it is getting worse.

I checked the drive lines, u joints, wheel bearings and brakes.


Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Trans fluid is spot on and it shifts great.

No whining the whole way home. It's really confusing. When it whines it sounds like an issue that would be consistent.

I'll have to try to get a video of it. It definitely sounds bad.

how is the truck shifting? dieing pumps in the trans will whine. by that time the pump needs to be replaced.

Trans shifts fine. Is a dieing pump whine consistent or would it be intermittent?

power steering pump? i have had that happen to me were it is a little low so air gets in the system and under throttle it will whine and at idle it will stop,

X2 on the power steering. And it probably quits from time to time with certain corner and menouvers you do

Power steering is full . It tracks with mph, not rpms.

Maybe the front end? Like, front axle?

hmmm its hard to say without hearing it myself then, what about transfer case? fluid level low in there? or even the differential fluid, i would check it just to be sure,

Diffs and t-case are full of oil.

Have you had it in 4wd lately? My front u-joints will whine for a few miles when it is very cold. It comes and goes with application of the throttle. My joints are new and they still do it from time to time.

Carrier bearing in rear diff?
