Ok so I got a glow plug timing set up. I want to set the timing on this engine. What cylinder do I use to set the timing? Ive heard many things on what to set the timing too. 6-11 degrees advanced.

Use the injection line that has the adapter above the injector.
I'm a novice at this but I've seen it done.

you picked up the fox valley(?) luminosity probe? Just bought one off ebay.I thought the timing for a probe was 2atc. Didn't read the directions yet but if I'm not mistaken it goes in the # 1 or 4 hole.
Better search it out!

Yes that's the one. Number one cylinder is the one that has the adaptor on it for my truck. So that's the cylinder I will be using.

You can use cylinder 1 or 4 for timing. The 6-11 degrees advanced is for the pulse timing method. Since you are using a Luminosity probe "glow plug timing set up", your timing will be in the 5 ATDC range (plus or minus 1 or 2). It is dependant on the cetane value of the fuel. Timing should also be done with engine at operating temp.

That is the Luminosity method and needs a completely different setting. You also need to know fuel Cetane rating as well...theoretically.
Now if I remember it is 2 degrees after TDC at 2000 RPM however another more versed in this particular method should likely confirm or counter my data with the correct settings.
Instead of timing by a pulse or injection cycle you are actually using the BURN or combustion cycle to time from.
It would be really good to know what type/model of instrument you are utilizing too.
The cylinder you want to time from is #1 the most forward cylinder on passengers side. It should have a peculiar additional piece for timing on top of the injector directly below the connection from the line from the IP.

I'm not the most experianced doing the luminosity type timing but the cetane of the fuel is important to know. That takes a hydrometer to know what the cetane is. Now every cylinder is numbered on the intake port runner at the head between the 2 bolts. Just clean it of to find it. The passenger side is odd cylinders and the rivers side is even cylinders. I have an older Rotunda meter that tells me the rpm used for luminosity timing is 1400 rpm. But to be sure you really need to know what the rpm is for this timing method. Not what some "think" it is. Sadly not many if any here use the lumi method of timing. Its much more difficult to use than the pulse timing method. From all the forum has determined both types of timing will be the same. What you set the timing for with the lumi will be the same as the pulse method. So if you do a pulse method timing to 8.5 advance it will show up the same as the lumi recommended timing of after top dead center.

Now thats news for sure. From all I have seen he uses the pulse method of timing. Yes, He does have the Snapon MT1480 meter with the special black box. He may have the ability to time by lumi method but I do not recall ever hearing him talk of it. Many years ago we talked in depth about comparing both types of timing just wanting to see what the lumi was doing the pulse method. Don't recall if that was done or not. The lumi method it the more difficult method of timing because you have to test the fuel and remove a glow plug. Thats never a fun thing either.
Well after reading his post I now see he does time by lumi method. I wonder if his black box failed. I know it was used in 2009 at the ralley on all the trucks. So things change and I learn something. Good find really.
