I believe I finally got my probe close enough to read and it was 17.4 and 18.5 bouncing back and forth. Do you guys think this reading could be correct and motor still run. It does smoke a lot and seems really weak pulling a load. Ive never timed anything for that matter,so any help is great. I am grinding a wrench , getting ready to try and get on the IP nuts and have seen about the 3/4 wrench and turnbuckle. Do you adjust with motor off?

I'm not 100% sure, but if you have the offset at 20 and the engine is a ~2000 rpm, you are way off. You should be around 8.5 or so. Someone else will hopefully confirm, but at this point I would say you are about 10 degrees off.....

is that before or after TDC? 18 degrees BTCD is way advanced. 18 dgrees ATDC is even worse. did you have the engine at full operating tempature? the cold advance needs to be off to be timed.

i set all mine between 9 and 9.5 degrees BTDC

I was in 20 offset hole and it's saying 17.4 to 18.5. The truck really feels weak when pulling my small tractor but I know these aren't powerhorses anyway. I do get a lot of black smoke.

Mine was at like 14. Check how much you have in your slots to rotate the pump. If the pump was changed and never timed it could be pretty far off.

My mistake with the meter was not getting the probe close enough. If the probe isn't close enough it just gives you back your offset number. It will drop some going from idle to 2k rpm. A couple degrees of memory serves. Might try changing the trigger from high to low. I didn't mess with mine much but it might make a difference. Shouldn't be much though. As dieselcrawler said you can always toss a timing light on it to double check. Even a static one you can guesstimate where you are close enough to know if the meter is actually reading.

Yes engine was hot and throttle held at 2000 rpm with turnbuckle method. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

I only did number 1. Is there anything I need to set up differently on 4? Another stupid question I guess is 4 the back cylinder on same side? Thanks. Steve

I would suspect your meter (probably faulty probe) if you don't think your engine sounds like a rattle can.I've had mine as high as 12 or 14 BTDC accidentally and it sounded god awful. If your timing was really 17BTDC..........you'd know it.
Odds are also high that timing isn't that advanced, not only due to extreme rattle but if your lines are even close, then it's also unlikely it's that advanced.

If it's blowing out black smoke (especially if your N/A) then you need to turn your fuel down two flats and see if that's gone. Then you need to get a new probe or a timing light so can see where your timing really is.

Timing wont cure black smoke and it won't turn an N/A into a turbo either,so expect to crawl uphill N/A with a tractor in tow.:D
100-125 ponies can only run uphill so fast lol.

Yea I do want to double check with a timing light. The motor doesn't sound bad and I am in the mountains of nc also and the tractors tires are loaded so it's definitely a load on her.
Thanks all for the input on this subject.
