I have done this, and if everything is healthy......including the engine, it will mostly work ok. Most of the switches I played with would open at 115-120, for a well used idi, they will generally need glowplugs before the temperature drops low enough to close the switch. Gm diesels used a switch that I remember being about 135 degrees and worked perfectly for all the conversions that I did (7.3 solid state system....even on a couple 6.2s). Problem is the aftermarket switch that is now available for that application never opens...…..because there is no switch in it, just a terminal that goes in loops and goes back out.
