Still here

Just dropping a line to let you all know that I am still here. I have been lurking around reading the posts. I've been busy working on my Fairlane. I have yet to put my turbo in my truck. I still need to get the inter-cooler cut down.
It's been a good summer for the truck. Towing as needed. My Fairlane a few times, a buddies dirt track car, and my latest acquirement.
I picked up a 1986 Mercedes 300 SDL Sedan (see pics). It has the straight 6 turbo diesel in it. I plan on using the diesel in my 1950 F2.
Again just dropping a line to say hi and that everyone know that I have not vanished.

Nice new toy there. I hope it's already been through the head replacement bit. Did you find out about that? That engine had a problem with the original head. They all end up getting replaced sooner or later.

The car came with a large 3 ring binder of receipts from the day it was bought up to a few months ago.
Yes the head was replaced on 11/8/2004 at the tune of $1295 for the head alone. The total bill paid was $2416.34. That is one spendy head.
This car has a bunch of new parts on it.
The deal was that the transmission was/is bad in the car. Only goes in reverse and 1st. I went through the receipts and the transmission only has 50,000 miles on it since being rebuilt. I called a few Mercedes shops and ask them their advice. They all told me that there is a micro switch under the gas pedal that controls the down shifting. When these switches go out or get stuck, the car thinks that it is at full throttle and keeps the transmission in first gear.
Needless to say, I must have "un-stuck" the switch with a few hard pushes of the gas pedal. I drove it around the neighborhood and it went through all the gears for me. My buddy drove it and had no problem either.
Now that I know that everything works, I'm almost afraid to part this car out as it is in really nice condition.
By the way, I paid $500 dollars for it and it has a half tank of fuel in it to boot.

Wow, for that price I would almost want to keep the car. Thats a steal of a deal

Sounds like you got a great deal on the car (I just did that with the one I'm driving now) so I wouldn't part it out - I would either drive it for a while or sell it whole and turn a profit on it if you don't need it to drive around in.

I wasn't even aware of an L6 diesel. Knew about the legendary L5, but that looks like a nice cruiser there. There aren't many cars that I would consider owning if I had use for, but the diesel mercedes is one of them.

The price for the head is not out of line. All the european and japanese diesels with aluminum heads cost around a grand WHEN, not if, they fail. The good news is that they usually go like hell and are very fun to drive when the maintenance is kept up.

Besides, being a german car it was designed for the autobahn

Dang, if it's already had the head done and the tranny is working, Service that puppy up and drive it! You will LOVE that car
Get some Auto RX and run some treatments through the engine and tranny and that thing will purr and shift like new.
Only drawback to those cars is they are so comfortable you can find yourself driving down the interstate at 50mph and not caring

Sorry, but for now I plan on keeping it. I must admit I lucked out on this one. I was searching for any type (no specific name brand) straight 6 turbo diesel for my F2. I found plenty in Volvo's, but at a much higher price. Then this popped up on CL, confirmed it was a straight six, called a few MB shops, talked him down to $500 and the rest is history.
