Sterling axle stupid noob question

Okay, my manual is leaving me stranded here. I'm trying to put my axle shafts back together and install them. I night these.

Last night when I started cleaning the flanges up, I realized there were crusty orings hiding in there. I found replacements.

Do I use the gaskets too (which are metal btw) and if so which way do I turn the ridge? The axles didn't have gaskets on them much to my surprise. Manual says replace with new o-ring or gasket. Is using both a problem or il-advised?

IIRC, those don't get used. Mock them up and see if they fit. I know mine didn't and it had been too long to return them, so they got chucked in a pile somewhere. Still no leaks.

I would stick with oring.
I bought those and lathered em up with elephant snot without test fitting. Yeah they didn't fit. Lol

As stated I have never seen a flat gasket on a sterling, just the oring.

Indeed. Orings only, never had one leak from there. Be sure to use the two piece stat-o-seal type seal for the hub to spindle. The older style once piece seals are expensive and always leak.

metal gasket is for E-series Fords equiped with the Dana 70 axles.

What are these seals and where do you get them, I have replaced one of mine twice and it still leaks, at the tune of about 45.00 a piece

If you have had repeated leakers, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND making sure your vent tube is clear.

I picked mine up from rock auto I think. It's an SKF Scot seal I used. If you hit my build thread, I think the part numbers are there. Did them not that long ago.

X2 on axle tube vent.

I use a thin bead of Ultra Black RTV because it's a helluva lot cheaper and works perfectly.
