My truck makes some blue / grey smoke and the exhaust smells really bad at idle. Yeah is got some problems, and I will eventually address those, but it got me thinking, and I cant beleive I am going to say this, but, exhaust stacks might be a good idea if it gets the smell/smoke up and away from the truck. The question I have is, with stacks do you get any smoke/smell in the cab when you have the rear slider window open?

And no 6" stacks for me, I am thinking of a pair of 2.5" or 3" something close to the original exhaust sizing.

If I drive with only the rear slider open then I don't get any smell in the cab, but If i have the rear slider and the side windows open it sucks the exhaust right in.

the exhaust exiting out the rear of the truck down low will do much better at keeping the smell out of the cab. When I had mine (stacked) and the windows were open and sitting at a stop light with the breeze blowing the right direction it would be in the cab with me. Might just look at addressing the issues with how the truck is running vs trying to bandaid around them.... just saying.... Might be as easy as setting the timing.

I have turn out stacks but when I'm not driving and the winds blowing the right direction it will come in, but not while driving. This is strictly a visual preference, but 2.5-3 inch stacks look to small but 6 inch stacks are to big. Like I said its only a preference do what you want with your truck.

Might just look at addressing the issues with how the truck is running vs trying to bandaid around them.... just saying.... Might be as easy as setting the timing.

I agree this needs to happen, but I am getting 19 mpg, hard to justify a new pump and injectors.


I will take a video of my smoke at idle with the engine up to temp, but its really bad cold. ( I expect that but I think its way over normal)

First thing you need to do is get the fule leak stopped, your 19 MPG will be more like 21, and your smoke and miss might go away

I run with all my windows open in the summer and have never noticed any smell in the cab from the exhaust. My stacks are up above the cab (you can see in the pics) and are 3". I love them for various reasons, mostly because I am offroad quite a bit and I don't have to worry about enhaust pipe getting in the mud, caught on tree roots, etc. I've had my truck in mud where you can't see the tires at all and I know exhaust would have been under and in harms way more than once!

I dont notice any exhaust smell in my cab. I have 6" miter cut stacks that are maybe 3" above the cab. With my windows down and my ext cab windows open I dont have any smell. You can just hear the exhaust pretty good and the whistle. I rarely have my slider open at all. Last time I did I didnt have my stacks installed. Guess I will try with my slider open and get back with ya. I'd say if your stacks are above your cab a little you will be ok. And I wouldnt go with 2.5 or 3". Will not look right at all. 4" to 6" would look better. It wouldnt look proportional at all. I was gonna go 5" on mine but decided it wouldnt look that good so I went with 6". I think it looks awesome and when i get my lift and bigger tires on it will look even better and proportional. I will post some pics of mine so you can see it from the side.

I guess I'm the opposite on size, I think the 5 and 6 inch don't look good, probably because I know there isn't that much pipe feeding them. It's all personal taste, and mine is for large enough to handle the air flow, but no need to be overkill.

Blueish gray smoke is telling me your timing is retarded.
I'm with Travis on this one. Addressing operating conditions warrant some attention versus trying to mask the real problem.

Yea I'd def fix the prob cause it could get worse and cause even more probs. Stacks are just for looks and sound. Sometimes I wish I didnt have them. I have 4" stacks on my 77 F250 and look ok. Not to big and not little. Too small is too dinky on a 3/4 ton. Doesnt look right but to each his own I guess.

What kind of truck do you have that is getting you 19MPG WOW. I just put reman injectors in and a reman IP and i am getting around 10 MPG. my front right brake is dragging though but that isn't gonna hurt my mpg by 9 mpg will it?

19 MPG isn't that uncommon. I got 21 with the Moose Truck and a tail wind a few times.
