I have a customers truck, its a 97 PSD with 90,000 miles and it takes a while for it to catch and run while cranking it. it has a new starter and 2 new cat batteries. it does this warm or cold, any ideas why. thanks.

HPOP bleeding down?

does it do it right after you shut it off?
CEL on?

scan it and get #'s on fuel pressure

it does it all the time. I will scan it and see what it says. so far I have done glow plugs, fuel filter and exhaust manifold.

here are the cods I got,
p0603 internal control module KAM error

p0344 cam position sensor circuit intermittent

p0470 exhaust pressure sensor circuit fault

I did some functional tests with the scanner and the truck running and everything was in spec. the scanner I used is a snap on modis ultra.

You can ignore the 0603 code. This is because the batteries were disconnected.

Even with the other two codes. Check the wire harness for damage. I would lean towards an HPOP issue.

even with a CPS code?

p0470, = pedestal starting to leak? dont think that would cause it...

i would definitely get a CPS.

also, do a contribution test, mine would do this also, sometimes not even starting at all, turned out to be the IDM

could you go into some more detail. I like power strokes but I hate all the electronics. that's why I have an IDI and all my drivers are no newer then 1991.

Elijah is it using an oil? If so, could be fighting injector oring issues. definitely got something going on with the hp oil system.
When cranking, how long is it taking to build icp?

a contribution test is another test ran on a scanner, it buzz tests each injector and checks the injector drive module.
if the IDM has an issue, it will tell you it has a IDM fault.

sometimes it will also fail #2, and #8.. ive been told not to worry about this.

actually, powerstrokes are just as easy as IDI's you just need a scanner LOL
( hay its what i tell myself to get by)

it passed the injector buzz test. I will be starting it latter today and see how long it will crank for before firing. my shop is around 60 so it should start easy.

when you start it, put the scanner on it and read oil pressure, and injection pressure.

it sat all night and it took about 4 seconds to start, I shut it off and re started it and it took about 2 seconds to start. I will report back soon with the other numbers.

EDIT--- I cant seem to find the oil pressure on the data display but I do have some fuel pressure numbers, at 650 RPM I have 580 psi and during cranking it goes to 1,400 psi and then starts. that's all in a 2 to 3 second area.

Those sound like oil pressure readings....and they are fine.

Did you measure the level of the oil in the HPOP reservoir after the truck sat overnight?

Those numbers seem backwards to me.
Should only need 500 to 550 HPOP pressure to start.
Check valley pan for oil, the o'rings at the ends of the HPOP to rail lines like to leak.
Disconnect the ICP before cold start, see if it starts quicker. The PCM will control the HPOP pressure.
If there is oil on the wire connection there, then it should be replaced.
Check the tin nut on the IPR, if it's loose or fell off into the pan, put it back on, clean with brake cleaner, a small dab of RTV will keep it from coming off again.
Fuel filter pressure should be 45 psi or higher.
Is the fuel filter drain valve o'rings leaking any?
On continuity test, disregard #8 and sometimes #2 or #3 fault.
As the weather gets colder, the oil is a big factor in quick starts, the older the oil the longer the start. I use 5W40 synthetic in winter, even a blend is better than 15W40 dino.

All in all, don't seem to be to long of a crank time.

That CPS fault being intermittent can come from a corroded connection, or oil leaking out of the connector.

From what your saying, getting a quicker start after the 1st start, it has a fuel or HPOP leak someplace. The 1st start pumps either up full.
Cycle the lift pump twice, if it starts quicker, then it's a fuel problem. Pump only runs for 20 seconds until the engine is started, then runs continues.
