I'm curious when this can come into play.

In real world conditions with a healthy engine and fuel system, there is probably fifty gallons of fuel cycling through the Return Line while one gallon is being burnt.

Lets say you have just topped off a tank and then discover some reason you need that tank Empty; rather than trying to suck the fuel out into buckets, just switch to Draw from the tank you need Empty and Return in a tank that has room to take this extra fuel.

On my personal truck, with the two factory tanks not so easy to fill and the big tank very easy to fill, if I have a long haul coming up where I would like all tanks Full to the brim, I will fill the big tank Full; run on the big tank while it is Returning into the Front Tank; watch the fuel gauge until it shows Full; then, switch the Return valve to send Return fuel into the Rear Tank; once that tank shows Full, I can switch Return (and Draw) to the big tank and run around on that until I am fixing to head out, at which point all I have to do is fill the big tank as the two small tanks are already Full.

With all three tanks Full, I can go a terribly long way and never set my feet on the ground.

I will add that I have all three tank vents tied together and fuel tight; in the event I forget and over-fill a tank, no problem at all, as the over-flow will go into the vent and find it's way into a tank that can handle it; nothing spills onto the ground.
