My oil results have been coming back showing hig iron wear. Now I'm showing high iron and chrome.. The chrome is the rings. Blackstone is suggesting high meteal wear somewhere... Maybe a broken ring... I'm a little suspect... Heath got a report that was bad too. Now I wonder if this is a play to get more "business" seeing they suggested a 2000 mile sample time. I probably will do that but.... I wont change the oil and I will be sending another sample to a differant lab for comparisons. I think Cat does testing and there is one near me..... All I have done is change injectors by removing the injection pump. I know that bolt loosening and tightening scuffs off plenty of metal but now the report is telling me there is so much soot they can't give me a viscosity reading... ***.... I have better injectors in the motor now.... I have been turning down the pump... The smoke out the tail pipe has been reduced to almost nothing... I have no blowby at all. I can run the motor and nothing comes out the oil fill spout and I'm not burning any oil... I will be doing a compression test later on. My last test was 530 +or- 5 lbs.... At least I have a base line to go from.... Mybe its time to start building another motor.....:dunno

These dont break rings, they are steel not cast.

Get some zinc additive to reduce friction.

You know Russ.. All this started after using the "new oil". I run Delo 400 15w40 all the time... Who and what do you suggest for the zink additive...

I run Archer Arpeco 15w40. It still holds the composition it did back in the 80's when my grandpa started using it in his 83. They sell it as an off road farm equipment oil and thus it does not need to meet DOT standards. It has 14 or 24 parts of zinc already in the oil.
You should really try to see if you can get some of this oil out there Gary. I'm convinced that this oil played a pivotal role in my grandpas truck being able to put over 650k on all of the original internals.
But if you want to just add zinc additives in your oil Comp Cams makes some good stuff, but the most expensive stuff Calvin told me about. I can't remember the name off hand but he'll be able to tell you.

Yep, good point, Cat's oil is also very good. I think it's more expensive than the Archer around here anyway.

Icanfixitall: Post the report, or at least the numbers.

Soot: It could be that you have a ton of agglomerized soot in the engine from you previous frolicing, which will turn into sludge and stick to stuff. It could be your "new oil" is breaking this stuff loose and it may take a while to clear it out. I'd shorten up the OCI for now.

Also, what oil filter are you running? And is the bypass valve on your oil filter mount working properly? I just ran into an IDI that had this valve stuck open and most of the oil was bypassing the filter. The oil got dirty fast! That has started a research project and I've been asking around for the bypass valve setting and figure out a way to check mine.

I don't know exactly what your numbers are, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get a "second opinion" from another lab. Blackstone is basically OK on most things but it never hurts to put another set of eyeballs on a problem. I just ran some stuff through Wearcheck (google it) and was happy with the results.

Depending on what oil you are using, IMO, I doubt just throwing zinc at the engine is going to do much good. The CJ-4 oils have been pretty well tested and have delivered good reports in all my older equipment. Now if you are running an SM rated gasser oil, maybe upping the zinc could do some good, but I've never seen or heard of high wear metals being instantly cured by a few hundred more PPM zinc. If there are such instances, I'd love to hear about them (he said with genuine enthusiasm!)

Gary, I don't think I would touch that motor. Sounds like something is fishy. I'd send a sample to Caterpillar and have them check it. As for oil, maybe you should flush the thing with some auto-rx and then switch to synthetic. My experience so far with amsoil has been nothing but positive, but then again I've only had it in there for about a month or so. But no leaks, even on my very high mileage engine.
