hi guys, i finally got the title worked out on the new truck ( 1993 f350 crewcab 4x4,7.3 idi w/ banks turbo, e40d ( dammit ! wish it was c6...) body and interior almost perfect, ac works... hey for $1350.00 ill rebuild the dang engine ! ) she drives but got a BAD knock, think its a rod bearing or piston pin. so im gonna rebuild another junkyard motor then straight across swap. i just gotta find parts ! im thinking 'ghetto' rebuild, as in rings, rod and main bearings, full gasket kit, oil pump, etc... any ideas on where to get parts? thanks again guys !

Before you go into the motor, did you verify that the injectors are ok? If the motor has a fuel knock, it will do the same thing.

Talk to Russ (typ4), give him a PM and he can steer you in the right direction.

we tried loosening the injector lines till they spewed, one at a time. didnt change the knock at all. ( unfortunately....) and the knock is constant, never goes away no matter how long you let the truck run/drive. wouldnt a fuel knock go away after a few minutes of running? ( we drove it home which took 45 minutes @ 55-60 mph, i would think it would have cleared out a fuel knock by then?)

the knock seems to be coming from the #1 cylinder area, on the front passengers side of the block, louder from block than from valve cover area. but i will try the valve covers first, maybe its just a 'shroomed tip on the stem or something... thanks again guys.

When you are ready to actually buy parts, I got some good deals from Rockauto.com. I also got parts on Ebay (pistons, gaskets and bearings), depends on your patience level. I was in no hurry.

Has anyone changed the glow plugs.... Maybe a tip broke off and is crushed into a piston...

My first guess would be a busted up valve, 2nd would be a bad piston pin slap. Bottom end usually is solid on these motors but many things are possible. Todd C actually broke a crank last year, that's the first legit busted IDI crank I have come across in almnost 8 years of reading these forums(and hopefully the last)
