What other meter will you be connecting this light to? This light can't function as a stand alone without being connected to a meter. Go to ebay and look at the Kent Moore J33300 meters. See the steel loop up in the top right corner of the meter panel. thats where the light you want to use connects to. Then you program the meter to time by the light method. Using a timing light is generally felt to not be as accurate as the meters like I described are. When you shoot the beam from the light at the timing tab you need to be straight on the lines or the shadow will tell you a different degree of timing. The meters used today have a microprocessor that tells you what the degrees of timing is down to a 10th of a degree. You can't get that from a light unless the light is designed to work that way.

These engines are timed at 2000 RPM, cheap timing lites will get you nowhere. I have an Actron that' just on the edge for a $100, Sears is another good one. But as said diesel's don't have a sparkplug ignition so there is no signal, the signal comes from a Quartz pickup attached to #1 or #4 injection line close to the injector. A Ferrett Quartz pickup is $189. Kent-Moore timing units on ebay are from $150 to ???? providing they have all the proper leads and are functional. If you go bidding on one, let icanfixall check it out.
