psd turbo

I was wondering what is involved in adding a powerstroke turbo to an idi. I remember reading that is been done before and i was wondering what kinds of fabrication is involved. I picked one up today at the junkyard as it was sitting on the drivers seat of a powerstroke van

Not sure on how to mount it but a Van turbo has a different housing than a pickup and spools differently

i know that, it has the smaller 1.0 housing on the exhaust side, i was going to switch that with one of the trucks. I know anything can be done, i just want to know if its worth the trouble or not. If not I have a spare turbo.

A lot have guys have posted about attempting this, but no one seems to know for sure. We still haven't seen anyone successfully mount one AND come back to show proof of it. Many of us are interested in seeing someone pull it off. You will be the first around here if you do it and prove it.
Some of our turbo gurus will probably chime in with some information you need to know about what it will take.

i think i might take a shot at it, im going to go back and get the up pipes later in the week. The hardest part i see is mounting it. I got the pedestal with it but still look like a challenge to put it on

Agreed, Barney had a PSD turbo on his IDI, however, it was in a compound setup and was feeding his Banks, I believe turbo mounted in a conventional manner. The PSD turbo was remote mounted under the cab, with the oiling system being run with the mechanical lift pump, and the air filter in the bed. He did see 20psi at one point in time, and then the truck broke again (hence the name "That Damn Truck"). I believe the truck was then returned to a "stock turbo" configuration and then sold.

That being said, it was not mounted at the only turbo, and the system did need some improvements. So one could be mounted and used. It will not be a "plug and play" setup, and may not fit on top like the kits do..... but anything is possible. We have a member that has a DT466 turbo remote mounted under the cab next to the transfer case.......

remote mount is another possibility, another thing im thinking about is if the powerstroke turbo will be worth putting on an idi. They dont start building boost until like 1600 RPM, they have huge exhaust housings on them even with the smaller van one, which is why the obs powerstrokes dont have intercoolers. I dont have much experience with turbo idis and where they could use the boost the most.

Man I have two Powerstroke turbo's laying around in the attic. I would sure love to fab one up on the IDI. I am looking forward to more information...hopefully.

I would remote mount. Seems to be the simplest way to go. And yes it will be laggy, but it would be an improvement

BTW my cummins has a 21cm^2 exhaust housing which has an A/R of roughly 1.40 (per the Internet) no wonder everybody swaps them out.

So...checking this thread in search of some stuff and will add this. I got an entire setup off of an (I think) 03 P-stroke. Cool right? No. The bore spacing is different on the exhaust manifolds. So I though I would just cut and fix that. Nope, the spacing for the mounting holes is wider too. Its just enough to **** you off there. So I thought I would mount the up pipes on my exhaust manifolds right? Nope, the body is in the way. If you had a sawzall you could do it but if not...good luck. So I try to mount the turbo behind the inlet where it would go and the wastegate selonoid hits the wiper bucket (part of the cowl that hangs down) and I don't mean maybe. Its by a good inch or so. So, I am going back to my SC idea and am going to put the turbo on my 357 and make it a blow through setup.
