problem developed - loud pinging sound

been having to drive my truck daily for about a week now while the wifes jeep is down, trucks has been running decent aside a little less fuel economy, till yesterday.. Developed a LOUD pinging sound coming from the engine, then at the next redlight it started missing at ilde, seems to run ok when going.... but at idle you would think you are in a drag car with a large cam, and the pinging from the engine is annoying even people next to the truck will look over at it... Have had no real issues with it aside it taking longer to start when warm, but my last post where adding a little engine oil to the fuel was suggested, and that helped significantly..

Sounds like a possible injector hanging up. Try a heavy dose of diesel Kleen. Or ATf in the filter.

If the above suggestion doesn't correct it, and before you start pulling injectors, consider this:

I had a similar problem a while back and it turned out to be the lever for the fuel pump had gotten one sided on the crank lobe. When I pulled it out the arm fell off. The replacement pump corrected the sound and the rough idle. It's something to check...

i have heard about the ATF in the filter, so i pull the filter and fill it with ATF, turn it over and let it sit over night?

does it sound like a rod might go threw the block at any moment?

mine sounded like some REALLY bad rod knock when i had 4 bad injectors.

Get a new filter, fill it with power service, seafoam, atf (pick your poison) run it for a little bit, let it sit over night then go run the **** out of it in the morning.

FEEL YOUR INJECTOR LINES! When an injector sticks open, compression forces are transmitted into the injector line, and it will get HOT. That may help with your troubleshooting.

thanks i will give all this a shot... and 94IDI yes sometimes it sounds like the motor is gonna throw the rod, the sound could be a knock, but sounds more"pingy" to me.. i have been told by an old retired navy man that i have an injector knockinga few months ago.. So i will start by troubleshooting the injectors..

Also the filter is the one to the left as you are looking at the engine bay correct? looks like an oil filter basically.. i was fixing to crawl under the truck to look for a frame mount inline filter..

If it is a leaky injector causing the knock, just go around and momentarily loosen each injector in turn. When the knock goes away, you found your culprit.

This is the best way to find a hanging open injector and its cost is nothing out of pocket but your hand. If someone told you a while back that you had a bad injector what are you doing about it. How many miles are on the injectors is a big question too. Yes... The fuel filter is located on the passenger side of the engine. If you end up replacing the injectors the torque is 35 lbs and things need to be clean. Make sure the copper gasket comes out with the old injector. If it does not ask how to remove it here when you get that far...

ok i will check each line when i get home..if they are easy to get to... as far as fixing which ever one was knocking i never did..prior maintenance on the IP and injectors are unknown, they could all be stock factory with 276k on them as far as i know..i am looking into doing it all at once..just the cost is a bit much w/o saving up for a month or 2 or 10..... thanks and will let ya'll know what i come up with..

OB wisdom says the IP and injectors on these trucks generally only last 125k miles. More if you're lucky and care for them. Does your IP have a rebuild sticker on it? Are your injectors painted stock IH gray?

It's a big hole in the pocket, but it may be time for a new fuel system.

i will have to look at the pump to see if it has a rebuild sticker or anything.. for the injectors i will have to look also.. are the injectors easy to get too? someone said under the valve covers?

ok, found all the lines... seems like almost all 4 lines on the passenger side of engine bay were too hot to even keep my hand on... drivers side wasn't too bad, only one line was pretty hot.. stopped to get a fuel filter and they tried giving me the wrong one and didn't have the one i needed so didn't get to try the new filter and seafoam trick over night... One question i have is if the injectors are stuck open wouldn't my truck be dumping fuel and pourin black smoke? i actually get very little smoke, and what smoke i do get is usually only light grayish...
