Power Through Precups?

I was discussing the dadiesel(I don't know if it's been brought up around here lately but if you read Diesel Power then you know that a few months back or so they had a small article on an IDI that supposedly was making around 1200 horsepower. It was built by Max Legod of Hypermax in the 90's prior to the big diesel performance boom. Apparently (and understandably) , it was highly unreliable. The block was said to flex so much as to crack itself and they had to utilize rubber freeze plugs to keep it from pushing them out. quote from fte)with a buddy of mine and he asked how would you get that much power through the precups and it got me wondering what other crazy secrets/things did this engine have on it. Either way I am always up for learning and would love to hear more about this.

No one will build a 1200 hp idi? maybe not but still I was wondering how they got all that, but it said minor head work. how is that possible to get mostly stock internals to go that far, when guys today are shaving pistons decompressing and have more technology now than they did then. How come 400 hp is kinda the top of where people are going with idis

This is like an urban legend... Spreads and the BS grows. The actual number is closer to 500hp, per the engine builder. Some stories about this truck say 174 lbs of boost, some say 800 hp, some 1200... Some say twin p-pumps, bored out injectors, blah blah blah...

Because of a little thing called TECHNOLOGY. Our idi's are......well exactly that. Indirect injection. Technology has come a long way which is why our engines do not make the same power as newer diesels. As far as idi owners making a "reliable" 400hp, you don't see that happening too often. Not saying it is not possible, but prepare to shell out lots of $ and decreasing reliability that these engines are known for.

Max Lagod at Hypermax was involved in building the first IDI diesels at IH in the '70s. He also was involved with the DT466 at IH, for which Hypermax is now most noted for supplying the tractor pullers using that engine. He is ONE SHARP DUDE!

The Hypermax truck was really nothing even close to real world, i.e. something you could use day to day. In reality, even 400 hp is IDI "************" because it's obscenely expensive to attain and transforms the vehicle from a truck to a hotrod. Hotrods don't tow or work. Every engine has this point, there's no shame in it, but the IDI is old tech and very limited in breathing ability compared to a modern DI engine. The basic structure was designed for about 200 hp with a safety factor (from a primary source... I am interviewing a guy who was there when the first prototype IDI was fired up!). It doesn't have the basic structure necessary for high power production. It's pretty expensive to get 300 hp/550-600 lbs-ft flywheel but at that level, IMO, you can more or less use the truck as a truck. As was said above, money is the great equalizer. You can get 300-ish hp from bolt-on parts and the engine will be reliable if it was well built using quality parts. There aren't bolt on parts available that will get you 400+ RELIABLE hp from an IDI, so you have to start in the R&D mode and make what you need. In both cases, $$$$$$!
