options for tach signal

im still trying to find aftermarket gauges for my 87 F350

with the oddball hall effect IH used, what are some of my other options for getting a tach signal?

heres a short read about alternator signals, does not seem to be the way to go.

I agree. First , the pulley ratio of the alternator and the pulley ratio of the engine would have to be found. And them you would have to figure out the numbers of poles in the alternator, and do the math of how many turns of the alternator equals who many turns of the alternator multipied by the number of poles. And finally build/buy a sensor circuit for the alternator. Does not sound easy. Why not just make a sensor holder and go off the crank?

i am now he wants to use the stock stuff, which is the hall effect. correct?

from my research ive been doing this morning,
there are 3 types of sensors, hall effect, proximity, and alternator.

ive been reading a proximity sensor is programmed for the number of teef in 360*
if i delete my vacuum pump, i should have all the room in the world to install the prox sensor.

now if i can get SW to provide the sensor, is another story completely

I think the proximity sensor will be a hall sensor too. Most of them are.

i need to do more reading, i dont grasp this concept much.

If you get the right tach the stock sensor will work. Some version of this is used on semi trucks. I just put a vdo speedo in our 85 IH dump truck. Calc pulses, tire size gear ratio so on , program speedo with button on front and instructions, good to go. They make a tach also.

Don't know if this would work for you. It reads injection pulse off the line like a ferret timing adapter. I have a tach made by them on a 65 BMW motorcycle that reads off a spark plug wire.

IMO, digital gauges are very annoying, distracting, on long trips
