Oil pressure port, and pyro question

Everything's pretty complete with the turbo install, but I do need to tap that port on the oil cooler bundle for my mechanical oil pressure gauge...can anyone provide info as to exactly where this is and what I need to tap it? Also, I have heard here and read in the instructions for the kit that you should not immediately shut off an engine with a turbo until it has had a respectable cooldown time, any idea what a safe temp for shutdown is? Thanks,

Most will tell you that 300 degrees or below that is fine for shut down temps. On the oil cooler port my question is why do you need that? Under the oil cooler you will see 2 1/8th inch plugs that are part of the main oil gallery ports. Also you will find the same port on the bell housing flange on the drivers side. Any of them will feed the turbo, air compressor or what ever else you want to feed oil to.

Gary, I'm too lazy to fool around with the port that's on top of the bellhousing and the stock sender location already is taken up with the turbo feed line. Perhaps these are the same port?

JD, not the stock sender location. There's an 1/8" plug on the driver side facing straight out right by the bellhousing. Both of my ATS 088 turbos had the oil feed plumbed in at that point and the sender remained in the stock location.
Lay down under the driver's side and look directly back towards the transmission tracing a line from the oil cooler and you'll find it.

Is there any reason not to plumb the turbo into the sender location?

It works fine. I put T in there , with the sender straight up and a chunk of aeroquip hose feeding the turbo.

I can think of one.
You are going to get abnormally low pressure readings due to the turbo being a pressure hog and will throw your readings.


I've heard that a bunch of times, But I haven't noticed any difference. The oil going through the turbo has to fight it's way past a bushing with a tight clearance just like any other point in the oil system.
If the turbo is going to cause a pressure drop , it's going to show up no matter where you plumb the sender in.

These motors oil pump can supply enough oil for several systems like an air compressor for one. The oil pump puts out 18.2 gpm at 3000 rpm. The motor can't use all that so we have a regulator built into the rear oil cooler header. Its preset from the factory for 50 lbs. Most don't show that high of a reading even after a complete overhaul. My rebuild was within factory specs and it was tuff to get 50 lbs of oil pressure on a warm motor. The idle pressure was fine, just the high side was low for my feelings. On my first motor I ran a tee off the turbo supply line that Banks had on top of the turbo. It always showed 50 lbs or better on that motor even with 370,000 miles on it. My Banks turbo on that motor had around 200,000 miles on it and it did have some wear on it but it would have been fine. The reason I replaced it was all the coolant I was burning ( about 6 gallons in 32 miles) going to work and back froze up the wastegate.... And about $1000.00 later I had another turbo from Banks. They are about 20 miles from my home... Lucky me.... What I really need is a good machine shop that close to me. Thats another story for later....:D

yes, but did they check the pressure at the alternate location before adding the turbo? Naturally it's going to be a little higher closer to the pump. By the time it gets to the stock sender location on top of the bellhousing, it's already suffered friction losses and pressure drops from the oil going out the crank and through the lifter gallerys.

Way back when I had a 72 Kenworth with a 1693 Cat i had two oil pressure gauges on the beast, one right off the pump and one at the furthest fitting on the front of the engine. There was quite a bit of difference in the pressures.
When I added the turbo feed line on my 7.3 at the sender location, I had no noticeable drop in pressure at the gauge
