have discovered a crack in my (6.9) oil pan, of course it is up over the cross member where i can't get to it to jb weld it. any ideas/methods on raising engine up vs. pulling it out alltogether ( which would allow repairing/replacing other items like oil cooler, valve cover gaskets etc.).

The service manual instructs you to jack up the engine as much as possible, unbolt the pan, then unbolt the oil pump (cause you won't get it out with the oil pump sump in the way), and remove the pan. It's a royal pain to be sure, but the only real way to permenently solve the problem.

Just pull the engine out & replace the pan. I tried the lift method on a PSD & it's a huge PITA & when it's out you can make sure the gasket is on right.

On the IDI there's no "gasket" it's a big tube of silicone. either way, pull the pan by pulling the motor. it's the only way you know you have the gasket surface clean and oil-free.

mmmm---when i pulled the pan on my brothers truck-----no silicone---and there was a pan gasket------as mel said---raise and remove--its time consuming--but much less than pulling the engine----

That's what I ment, alot easier to make sure you get the silicone "gasket" on right when you aren't fighting a crossmember.

If your patient it can be done. Make sure you are warm, the area is clean and you are comfy under the truck. Loosen or remove the engine mount bolts, raise the engine up with a cherry picker and go nuts. 2-3 hours total. JB weld will not hold if you try to do the repair with the pan on the truck. More then likely its rust not a crack.

I repaired mine with JB weld with the pan on the truck, though I did drain the oil first, and it was in an easier place to fix.

I had a rusted through pin hole on my pan and was able to braze it.

Paint it with por15 before it leaks-if you want to go a step further layer a sheet of paper towel with a second wet coat of por on it ,just like you would layer fiberglass-you won't be sory.
