oil cooler seals

My oil cooler just started leaking during a cold start up.

Parked the truck, is there a pn for a seal kit I can buy at a parts store or is it dealer only?

Wow that was a fast responce for help.. Another reason this is the best forum about the idi engine on the net. Your about to undertake an especially messy job. But please ask how this job is done before you turn a wrench. Another member just was doing this job and he couldn't get the complete unit out of the frame for some odd reason. I have never done the job in frame but I have done the o ring seals several times when the engine was out on a stand. I also made up a couple of drilled and tapped plates to pressure check the finished job. I really didn't want to cut an o ring and have to do the job again in the frame. Please test fit the headers on the bundle ends before you install the o rings. See how tight the fit is and how straight the ends needs to be so they don't bind up while being pressed on the bundle. I used a bessy pipe wood clamp about 3 ft long with some 2x4 wood to soften and support the bundle and heads as I pressed them onone end at a time. Trying to press both heads on at once usually wont work.

I replaced a rusted out cooler on a PSD few years back. Messy job but wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.

Should be about the same for an IDI.

So have you done this job yet? Hard to want to do anything without a heated shop with the weather we been having. I hope this will be the week winter will finally let go.

I've been procrastinating doing mine for awhile now. I don't drive the truck much right now. My oil still looks and tests ok, but my coolant has kind of an icky sheen to it. I'm going to change the coolant and see. I barely loose any oil between oil changes 3000mi and it does loose some coolant but not a lot.

Saw you blow by me on the interstate the other day. It was that bright blue tank mounted filter that caught my eye. I was driving a semi not my Ford.
Must have been right before this happened to you.

Yea working out in the cold is never a fun time........dieseldirt, I myself went through this in august things imo that should be noted....like Gary said when you jack up the engine from the oil pan make sure to use a 2x4 or a couple, treat the process like open heart surgery and clean the frig outta everything. Especially clean the corrosion off the tube ends and inside of the headers where it all goes together. If you dont have a press and your going to assemble the cooler using your truck and a floor jack remember the floor jack lifts on a tilt so thatll have to be compensated for. (not sure if I explained that right but I think you know what i mean) And when your reinstalling the cooler put a very small amount of elephant snot/permatex aviation gasket (i forget exact name) on both the header and the mating surface. O and while your drqaining coolant from your block throw two petcocks up there so next time you need to flush your coolant it wont run down your arm and into your shirt .
