Paperclip :D All you need for OBDI. Of course, I've never had an automatic so it would be best if someone 2nds or vetoes this. I know that pulling codes on OBDI gassers is just a matter of grounding one of the pins on the self test harness and reading the check engine light flash out.

Same on the late '80s turbo Dodge cars, except you don't need the paper clip. You just cycle the ignition and the odometer flashes the code to you.

I remember being amazed the first time my buddy showed me that years ago, but was a '88 Ramcharger (N/A 318).

You need a little more than that on a Ford. Here's how to do it.

I've never used a test light or analog voltmeter for the test. That is one of the ways Ford suggests to pull the codes, but the first half of that (reading the "blips") also applies to the CEL. I always stick a bare wire into the trigger port (single blade self test harness all by its lonesome) and ground the other end. On Bruiser, I actually had a wire with a ring terminal grounded to the fender with a male spade on the other end that I could just plug in whenever I wanted to pull the codes. I always record the flashout on my phone camera so I don't screw up counting the flashes.

I wish I had a phone video camera back when I was hotroding the little blown Dodges. It would've been a lot of help for my younger beer fuzzed brain ;)
Back to the scaner, if I don't want to count blinks, I am thinking that I have to buy a OBDIscan tool. My web research leads me to believe that I & II are completely incompatible systems. I've also read that some of the OBDI tools won't read the E4OD codes, do you know anything about this?

Never had a slushbox so I can't say, but I can day that every OBDI "scan tool" I've seen plugs into the self test harnesses and then blinks the code out on a single light...sound familiar? ;Really I'm sure there are others out there that read the pulses and translate the number to you via a screen, but the cheap ones at the parts stores just flash out on a little LED on the tool.
