Hi all been snooping around the site and being new to the diesel world I must say thanks for all the good information available here. Got into a 1988 Super Duty with reading toolbox and 8ft dump body. A little hard starting but just replaced the return lines and caps. Better but on a warm day how long turning over is normal to start? 5-10 seconds is about what it takes now. Other than that once its running it is unstoppable. Thanks for any insite.

It should be better than that although that isn't terrible. Probably the glow plugs are shot or it is something with the fuel system, that is unless you have extreme blowby coming out the oil filler at all times when it's open or going through a ton of oil. How long do the glow plugs stay on? It's an 88 which is the earliest I have ever seen an F-Superduty( 10 lug 14,500lb GVWR right?) but that still means it has the 87 and later solid state glow system. That means if there is a dead glow plug anywhere or someone used el cheapo glows that don't work well with the factory system like autolites or chumps, then you'll have hard starts at all times. You could also try plugging in the block heater when cold to see if that gives you an easy cold start. That would rule out anything more serious. I'm betting on the glows or an air leak you haven't found yet or the motor is severely out of time.

had the same problem on my '89. turned out my glow plugs were shot. one brand new set and it barely takes 3 revolutions to crank no matter what the ambient temp.

JD- No blow by but GP are el-cheapos. Will correct that shortly. I do know that the High idle is not working when cold. Tempeture sensor I think is shot. If I jump 12v to the solenoid it will work properly. Does this also affects the IP cold advance timing? 10 lug 14,500 GVRW is right.
