Hi,I need some advice as I have a 1993 International 4700 rollback with the 7.3 idi and want to replace the engine with one from a 1992 Ford pickup 7.3 idi. I heard that although the block is the same the bolt-on accessories are different so can someone tell me for sure that this is true? THANKS in advance!

I am sure there are differences, there would be if you were swapping from one year Ford pickup to another Ford pickup during certain years. But that does not matter, you have all the stuff you need on your old engine correct?

Yes,I just need to be sure everything that needs to be changed is just bolt-on stuff not that there are differences like motor mount or block to trans bolt pattern ect

The short answer is yes. You have a different trans adapter for the International, but the bolts in the back of the block are in the same pattern. You'll have to change accessories, exhaust manifolds, water pump, oil pan (these just use RTV, no gasket), oil pump pick up tube, and obviously the motor mounts. Internationals don't typically use a block heater, but if you want to use yours, you just need to put a cord on your 4700. If not, you don't need to remove it. Of course, that's assuming that something crazy like the starter hitting the cord doesn't happen. The oil cooler is different. I don't know if the ford truck one will work in your 4700 or not. The exhaust pipe may hit it on the driver's side where the pipe comes off of the bottom of the manifold. I can't remember how closely it hugs the block. I haven't messed with one since the late 90's. There may be more that I forgot to mention so check it over carefully before you try to install the replacement engine.

Best thing to do is set then side by side and change anything that looks different. Look for little things too.

Yes, he probably will have to change the odd-ball Ford bellhousing adapter. I still wonder why they did that. Though international was not much better. They made the idi with a odd-ball international bell pattern, and then almost every application of this engine requires a bell adapter, yours might have a SAE adapter if you have a official medium duty truck transmission.

Ford could have made their adapter match their big block pattern I would have thought. But no, they made their adapter adapt to a totally different odd-ball pattern for the diesels, and had to re-tool all their transmissions to fit.

Ford makes everything different every time. Small block chevy is small block chevy, but nothing Ford interchanges with anything.

One of the nice things about our diesels is that they aren't Ford, so everything on the engine interchanges.

Here's a question I don't think I've ever seen answered.

Ford had a factory turbo system on the IDI. IIRC it was just a ford badged version of an aftermarket system(I forget which one). Does anyone know if international did something similar? or was the IDI only available as NA from them?

As far as differences go, I've been reading up on this for a little while because I'm looking to do the same from a 6.9ih to a 7.3 ford. I believe most are just external pieces. As far as the long block goes, it's all the same.

Best thing to do would be to compare the two once you get the ford engine in your hands.

If it was me, I'd make sure the internals are in good shape on the ford engine(rebuild it if you want), then I'd pull the international, remove/cleanup/install the proprietary pieces, and then reinstall it back into the truck.

The Factory Turbo was a detuned ATS 093. I used to think that International didn't use a turbo, but someone posted quite a while back that they saw a bus with a IDI and a turbo. I assume that the bus was an International.

A few of the things I can think of differences off the top of my head:

Motor mounts,
Transmission adapter
Ford uses a 3600ish governor, IH uses a 2600ish governor in the IP
Exhaust manifolds
oil cooler headers, the bundle is the same
fuel filter mount
bolt on accessories, including the water pump. Ford uses the fan clutch with the big nut, IH bolts on, and doesn't have a clutch I believe
The IH may have an air compressor for air brakes/suspension. That can be moved over, and the plugs in the block removed to supply oil
Oil Pan and pickup tube (actually the same oil pan, just turned so the sump is in the front)
Dip stick is different and is installed in a different location
Ford did offer a "Factory Turbo" which was a slightly modified ATS 093 with different exhaust outlet and crushed down pipe. IH didn't offer the IDI with a turbo, but there were aftermarket ones, I know that Hypermax made an IH specific aftermarket turbo

This is all that I can think of, right off....

The oil pan is different. the shape's different. You also can't turn one around backward. Then the "bumps" for the oil dipstick would be on the wrong side.

Do you have any more details about this? Did it have the internal differences like the Factory Turbo Ford engines did? If that was flywheel HP, then it was getting close to twice what the Ford factory Turbo engines were rated at. It would also explain where the internal upgraded parts came from. It's just hard to believe that they would design all new parts for the few engines that Ford sold that already had a turbo on them. Yes, there were a lot, but very few compared to all of the N/A engines that were sold in Fords over the years. I have no info on numbers, but I'd bet that the N/A engines sold still out number the Factory Turbo engines sold in the two years (or 1 1/2 years if you want to get technical) that they were offered.

Yeah, my oil pan is definitely not a flipped ford piece. All the ford pans I've seen had a definite sump in the back, mine is more like a flat bottom that slopes down to the front of the engine, so no sump essentially.

Oh, and my international doesn't have the 2600 rpm governor. The engine was rebuilt by jasper at some point so maybe the pump was swapped as well. I can try and get the numbers off of the pump if someone can decode it.
