Do you think they would be damaged that fast ? The coolant made its way into the oil after I shut it off, and it hasn't been fired since. Though I did crank it over a few times to check for bubbling in the coolant .

no they do not get damaged that fast. If it were mine I would drain the oil and all coolant, refill the oil and replace filter. Then run it a minute. Did you have water or antifreeze in it?

I poured I believe 3.5 gallons of water and 3.5 gallons of coolant in it . My brother thinks its just condensation because the engine sat for over a year , but it looks too milky to be condensation in my opinion.

um yeah just find a 86/87 6.9. You can pick one up for less than $500 on CL most of the time its the whole truck for $500. Yank that engine, do a little refreshing if its got gaskets leaking. replace the head gasket on the 6.9 and add some studs and install. then go buy a turbo and go to town.

Already have the turbo . There are 2 6.9's on craigs right now , but both are pulled . There's no way for me to tell if its worn out and going to drink oil , which makes me nervous since I am almost out of cash to throw at it . I've been searching everywhere on craigs , even have a wanted ad but haven't had much luck . Schucks wants $725 for a head , no thanks.
Do they interchange from left to right ? I have a good pass. side head . I would compare them myself but I don't have it here..

Heads are the same; IH was good about everything interchanging. I know the heads on my 6.9 were identical when I pulled them, just temp sensors and plugs in different holes.
Do a leakdown test if you haven't already (compressed air in GP holes), that will find your problem.
If you do swap the head, either get your block and heads checked, or buy a straight edge and check them yourself. My drivers side head gasket blew instantly because the head was warped when I installed it. No way to tell without a straight edge and flashlight.

I pulled the #2 glow plug and cranked it over . It shot milk all over the engine . I will definitely check the block and have the head tested. If the head is cracked I will feel better about replacing the head and won't worry about possible cavitation .
I actually have a good lead on some complete trucks , going to check them,out tomorrow.

homelessduck: If you end up needing a head(s) there is a place out of Louisiana (or maybe it was Mississippi?) that has good prices, and apparently good quality heads. I priced some thru them this summer, and IIRC a set was around $700 shipped to me, thats complete and ready to rock. They do sell individuals as well as in pairs. I'm having a senior moment at this point, but will look for the link. OR PM towcat, as he was the one that referred me to this company. I think Gary/icanfixall knows the name of the company as well.

I believe they suggested them to me a year ago when I was going through this same problem . Wish I had gone that route !

I have seen one 6.9 with cavitation so I would never say never on a 6.9, but I agree that the 7.3s are much more likely to have an issue with it.

All diesel engines are suseptible to cavitation.

I said, "may" be damgaged. Pull the caps when you get it out and apart and see what they look like. If the oil was milkly, the bearing got wet. You need to look at them at a minimum.

I looked at an 87 f250 today .. It's actually pretty clean . It's a 4x4 with a 5spd . We agreed on $750 and I'm picking it up tomorrow . I'm either going to toss the engine in the 90 or drive it while I change the head on my 90 . Would an 87 be a 6.9 or 7.3 ? I couldn't read the sticker .

I started to pull the head today .. Anyone have tips for changing the driver side head without pulling the engine ?
I'm going to try to reuse the valley pan since it's new .. Can I unbolt the driver side intake bolts without cracking the intake ? This should be fun

Does anyone know if unbolting the driver side of the intake only will cause it to crack ? I know they are prone to cracking if you aren't careful when removing the bolts but I'm not sure if it will be an issue for me .
