New guy Going about this backwards

I am sorta new to this forum. Yes I my self bought a 7.3 IDI truck and of course not running. Started reading this forum right off the bat to gain as much knowelege as I could to bring my new project to life. So I get all caught up in tearing apart the truck. Now reassembling and having all kind of questions and problems.
So the first thing I do is jump into a thread with both feet and not thinking of anything else. I appoligise.
I am starting over.

Hi, I am new to this forum and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Chuck and I am the proud owner of a 1991 F350 4X4 dually flatbed 7.3, 5 sp manual hubs, std. cab. Lots of plans. The first one is to get it running.

I am down to the glow plug part of the motor. I started with the controller. All the wires are connected correctly and have a good clean tight connection. The batteries are at 12.34 volts and that is what i have at the battery side of the controller. The wires were melted at the plug and I replaced with th correct size of wire and lugs. When I turn the key on I have 11.05 volts at the ignition terminal. And 11.95 volts at the glow plug terminal when it is cycling. When the light goes out the glow plug terminal has 5.05 volts. I also checked each glow plug terminal and they are the same voltage.

I started this project a month ago. 2 weeks ago I started the motor with difficulity. The motor when warmed up runs great and zero smoke. I tested the glow plugs at that time and 6 of the 8 were bad. I had some old glow plugs and tested those and found 5 ones that worked. Needed one more and went to the auto parts store and bought a autolite plug. Now with 8 I put them in and thought I had the glow plug problem licked.

Today I tried to start the truck and very hard to start. Thinking it might be glow plugs I decided to test them again the simply way and use a test light. 3 were good and 5 were bad. the autolite one wouldn't come out. Did the dill thing and it came. It was buldged. I have know idea what brand the rest of the plugs are. I am ready to quite chasing my tail and start fresh.

Hi, from what I’ve seen here there is no such thing as a dumb question. As myself being new to this forum and posting and the like, I have found that the people here are more than willing to help. Your not starting backwards your reverse engineering!

berus are the only glow plugs to use in these trucks

Autoliteuke here to most people means BAD just for the reason you ran into. Motorcraft or Buru is preferred. Most members are going to need to know the year and model of your truck and if any modifications that you know of have been performed on it.

Start fresh: ditch the Autolites and get yourself a 8 new Beru glow plugs, save the old ones for spares and test them every Fall before it gets below 50 degrees. You won't believe how much your starter and batteries will love you as your truck will fire off quite easily, and if you pay attention to the warm up cycle, you'll know when you burn up a glow plug as it will cycle much quicker.

I glanced through the FAQ and went through all of the tech articles. I already did the clutch rod heim joint end project. Turned out excellent. Great site.

Welcome aboard! Looks like you are getting close to getting it up and running for you. You have (unfortuneately) 1st hand experience with the poor quality of Autolight glow plugs. Motorcraft (made by Beru) are best. Glad to have you here. Enjoy the IDI.
