new exhaust?

On my truck, i have a 2.5" pipe going out the side, in front of the rear wheel. I really like it, its loud and mean. but i do really like the sound of a diesel with a deep tone. So i almost want that

I heard an idi with one stack, It still wasn't really deep. So i was thinking of running a 4" to the back. OR, maybe running dual exhaust, and a 3" or 4" on both. Anyone have these setups? do they sound good?

To me the IDI sounds very much like a strong-running 454 Chev, and lately I've been thinking of installing some muffler that is normally found on hopped-up big-block trucks, like that Super-40 from Flowmaster, or the Super-44. Problem for me is they are all fairly expensive, so it's very likely that I will end up with a factory muffler, $40 for it vs. $90 or so for the flowbastards...

On another thought, has anyone ever installed a Cherry Bomb or a Thrush glasspack on an IDI? I'm thinking if I can get one and somehow lose all its glass fiber packing it will still chop-up the sound pretty good but will also become a resonator box and deepen up the tone quite a bit... Any ideas on how to get rid of the content of a glasspack without removing the perforated tube inside it?

I have been running an un-modded cherry bomb on my Benz (also an IDI) and it has a good deep tone. I assume it would be similar with a V8.

You could cut the side of the cherry bomb, pull out the packing, and weld it back up.

Can't weld tho, I mean I can and I'm pretty decent with the MIG, but I ain't got a welder or access to one. Not a mad idea tho, not at all. Actually my only reasoning for trying to lose the packing is a concern of it getting plugged up by soot, if the perforated tube gets all plugged up then it will become like a straight pipe, so we're back to square one - how realistic is this concern of mine? Also, has anyone cut open a factory muffler, and if yes is there some packing inside it, or is it all hollow like most Flowmasters?

I used to have the factory exhaust into a 3" 40 series flowmaster, into a 4" 90 and exited in front of the RR tire, sounded like a built big block gasser. Spent plenty of time in the dunes parking lots, with people wondering why I had in International Diesel Power sticker on the windshield and it sounding like a gasser
Now, I have a true 3" Y into a 4" pipe with a large Flowpro 4" muffler (though I'd prefer a magnaflow all stainless...next time) and it sounds great, deep tone, more distinct. My experience is, the larger pipe you get the less rasp you get, if it's straight piped it gets raspy and rough at the top end (had 4" straight out the back for a while once. It seems like an opened up exhaust, with some sort of either muffler or a simple resonator to smooth out the tones is best.

I did on my '88 F250. It was 4" in diameter and 3' long. That truck sounded great! I could be doing 30 mph, and everyone swore I was doing 80! I have another one, and have thought about putting it on the truck I have now, but will the muffler increase my EGT's or affect boost? I have a 3" downpipe, and it turns into 4" right after that and go all the way to the back and dumps out behind the back tire. If I stand on it and manually shift through the gears, I can get a "rap" out of the 4" pipe at about 3,000 rpms.

On my gassers, I used to run the heck out of it the get the exhaust nice and hot after installing it and then spray cold water from a hose up into the glasspack. Rev it up a few times, and it was good to go. Could try heating it up with a torch and before installing it and dump water into it too.

Yes, that was it!!! I knew there was a trick, just forgot what it was. I think I'll go and buy me a glasspack tomorrow, then off comes the torch!!!

I never had a torch to use, so I had to resort to "redneck" methods. I'm thinking about adding the glasspack to mine to see what it sounds like and if it changes my boost. Someone told me that I can boost faster and higher with a "muffler". I have a little wire feed welder and can change it back if I don't like it I guess.

Ive got a Thrush welded muffler on my truck. Its a copy of a flowmaster 40 but it only cost $30. I went and ran 3" from the y back and dumped the exhaust out in front of the wheel and finished off with a 5" stainless tip. It sounds pretty good!

i have dual thrush packs on my truck with 2 1/4" exhaust and it raps pretty hard around 3,000. i like the sound but it definatly has that "hick" or straight pipe'd 350 sound. i put a moroso spiral muffler on my 93 with an I6 and it sounds decent, i thought about getting one for my diesel.

I have changed exhausts on my idi about 10 times literally and the main thing that i have noticed is there is no way to get rid of the raspy sound in the higher rpms. The bigger the pipe the deeper the tone and glasspacks do make it deep and rumbly but you will still have that rasp at high rpms.

I think I'm going to add the glasspack on mine. With all the mufflers/glasspacks/straightpipe, has anyone seen much of a difference in EGT's or boost? I'm curious if those numbers are affected with a muffler of some sort. I figured the easier the exhaust could flow, the lower the EGT's. This is my first turboed engine, so I'm still learning a lot of new things that didn't apply on the 3 NA trucks that I've owned.
