My questions is, What kind of MPG are you getting and how? Tell your stories from poor boy tricks to big money spending. How can we milk these trucks for all there worth.

Trick is this:

Light truck
Overdrive tranny, perferably ZF
Auxillery Overdrive
3.55-4.10 in the rear
2wd
Skinny, tall tires
Good running motor with good injectors/IP

There you go ;Sweet

Also speed kills. In Oregon (55-60mph) I got an easy 17-18mpg. Down here in Texas (70mph) I have a hard time getting 15mpg.

Last week (been using DieselKleen for a couple months, just aired up crappy rear tires, mostly under 60mph) I managed 18.6mpg. This past week with tires going flat and A/C on I pulled about 16.5. Apparently tire pressure has ALOT to do with it when you're hauling 1000lb of tools every day, and I am the world's biggest DieselKleen fan after the summer I've had.

On B100 I get about 2-3mpg less, but I save $2.50 a gallon.

My injectors are old "single B" codes, which I know nothing about, but appear to be pretty economical. The DK really brought them back to life. IP is a year and a half old, OEM setting (not turned up).

My truck had 360 *** kilometers on it when I bought her....about 225XXX miles. Pump condition was unknown, injectors look to be original. I had highway tread, 235/85R16's on her last summer with the E4OD and I could get 21.5 MPG if I REALLY tried. I had to drive it like an old man though, and this was all rural and city streets...no highway travelling.

I put the winter tires on, the winter grade fuel in it and I got 18 - 19MPG with a dying torque converter.

I JUST switched to a ZF, and am waiting to see what I can get out of her now.

My timing was a little retarted, so I advanced it about the width of a dime and it seemed to smarten her up a little.

In a 3500 mile RT adding Diesel Kleen did nothing to increase MPG. When in Missouri, Howes was on sale, added it to the next fueling (110 gallons) increased the MPG by ~1.5.

I run that Howes in the winter time like my truck won't run without it! I buy it for $15 a bottle, but it lasts quite a while!

1999 bought my truck, 12/14 MPG kept the Rotella changed every 2,000 miles for couple years.

Now I get 22 MPG city and I dont use Change Rotella oil, anymore! :rotflmao

I keep a clear and unrestricted nano Fibre air filter on the engine and two other oil filters take place of the OEM filter

Gear oil helped improve MPG

ATF fluid improved MPG

60psi rear dually tires and 70psi up front

70mph @ 2300 RPM=22mpg minimum

Coming on 4,700 miles on all new 7.3 IDIT engine.

I have seen as good as 26MPG in 2007.

truck had a 3 year break so I could upgrade all the non turbo parts to turbo.

The air filter made the best noticable improvement on MPG

Some of you guys are doing better than me.

When I bought the truck it still had the stock transmission and gearing. That is, C6 three speed auto and 4.10 gears with stock 235/85/16 tires. MPGs were between 9-13.

Swapped to 3.08 gears and MPGs jump to 13-16 average with rare occasions passing 20.

Swapped the transmission for an E4OD (four speed auto with locking torque converter in 3rd and overdrive) and MPGs increased to 16-20 average with 24 MPG possible at restricted cruising speeds (55 MPH). Adding the moose pump also seems to have given my MPG results more consistency.
For the sake of the warranty of the new pump, I've been running stanadyne fuel lubricity supplement but switched to Howes recently since everyone swears by it. I don't know if this is adding anything to MPGs since I haven't run a single tank without it once the new pump went in.

All of my numbers are for an empty truck, light towing brings it down by about 15-30% depending on the conditions. The high rise canopy that is on it right now is also hurting a bit.

Warmup time is a killer on MPGs. Something as simple as having the block heater plugged in can result in an average bump but as much as 2 MPG even on longer trips (200 miles). Shorter trips in urban conditions where distances are 10 miles or less with lots of warmup time on the road really kills my MPGs and even with a light foot I struggle to do better than 15 MPG with speeds never passing 35 MPH. Similarly, if I am on a long trip that requires switching tanks in the run, almost always, the MPGs on the SECOND tank are better. I suspect warmup time is playing a role here too since the engine, transmission and differential are all warm by the time I switch tanks. Cold weather exacerbates this problem.

Have you guys noticed any difference in swapping to synthetic diffy oil? I'm thinking of trying that on the next fluid change.

Stock 93 F250 4X4, 7.3, ZF5, 4.10's...... Was getting 14 MPG pretty consistent. Added Hypermax cowl induction intake, Banks down pipe, 3.5" exhaust with Aero turbine muffler, now getting almost 16 MPG consistent...... Truck has more power, less smoke and sounds awesome............;Sweet

Worst that I've had since the turbo, 13 (hole in tank) not counting that 15-16 which was peg for 200 miles straight. Last night running hard for 150 miles I barley used 8 gallons (dirt roads with snow and playing with a cop that followed me 20 miles out of his jurisdiction on to the res. with his lights off). I've got 28-29 for 3 tanks in a row down in the city (Detroit) but I haven't been able to do it since. Hoping that the new injectors will help (Thanks Russ), I just need to install them.
Before the turbo it was 15.5-16.5 with the exception of 1 fill up (both tanks) that got 12, first tank of ULSD, haven't filled up at Speedway since.

14.81 (hauling/towing) AVG MPG @ 39 tanks.
spedometer/odo adjusted for shorter tires, verified via gps.
my loads consist of up to 3 ton and my towing is only, always a 2 ton chipper.rural, hilly Maine roads.there a few tanks from time to time, where hauling off wood chips,or wood etc isn't required,so im empty.
my average is slowly dropping still since iv added duallies........how low can it go lol.
need a few more mods.
not too bad considering that wind catching bed i think.that and we don't have roads where you can go the same speed for more than a minute or two it seems.

pretty happy, but i plan on doing at least:
1.RV deflector.-despite what most claim, for my use it will surely help,as my bed is just over the cab and close to it.
2.front bumper valance.
3.dual electric fans/stock fan delete.
4.synthetic trans fluid (already running mobil 1 in engine.)
5.turbo
6.just got a timing meter off ebay,so im going to toy with different settings to find my sweet spot.
(i have no interest in setting it where everyone else does and just calling it good.oh no,no lol im going to try small increments with a few tank samples as i go.)

there might be more, but that's all i can think of for fuel economy future mods.
id really, really like to see 15-15.5 avg with my setup someday.i wouldn't cry if i could knock on 16 mpg's door either.;)

oh yeah,
and i drive like an old woman(unless im loaded up and see a hill,i hold her up over 3k and don't think twice.:D).nice and easy off the line, with top speeds max of 55mph,and average speeds of 45-50 somewhere.

anyway, thats my MPG story and im sticking with it.:)

edit again.
oh yeah, and the custom cam grind from Russ sometime down the line a bit.
i spend most of my time down around 1500 rpm.so the drop of the ponies down in the power band a bit more would help too im sure.

I'm getting 12-13 city/suburban and probably a little more than 15 on the highway on B100. I have some return line leaks and I found out my timing is a little bit retarded. On my last tank, which was 254 miles, I went to meet Billy and Gus in Jacksonville and also drove about 50 miles in town for the short work/school week. Tank was B100 and I had a pretty nasty return leak at #1 injector and some weeping elsewhere. The end result was approximately 14.9-15 mpg. Smolikin, is it really true that the B100 gives you a 2+ mpg penalty? I was thinking 5-10%, 10% of 20 would be 2 so I guess it makes sense. In that case I don't feel so bad about my old mule.

best is 21.5, 55-65 1100 miles in one go. at night cold air and zero traffic.

worst was 9 towing real heavy (15000+) enclosed trailer. no turbo and floored all day

mostly get 13-14 unloaded at 65 but have gotten as high as 17.

Ive tried fresh pumps and injectors, timing all over the map, turbo, intercooler, big loud exhaust, and synthetics in everything. no real measureable and repeatable results with any of it.
