Main rear seal

It's been leaking for ever but very little engine only uses 1qt every 3k miles but I think it still should be fixed?

I have not removed this tranns by myself before (zf-5) so can anyone explain it here so I can follow instructions. It don't seem all that dificult but I'd like to know everything from the first bolt till I get to replace the rear seal if possible.

EZ, the rear main seal in the Moose Truck has been leaking for 20 some odd years. I wouldn't even think of fixing it, until you have some other reason to go in there, like to do something with the clutch. However, be that as it may, and since you asked, you have 2WD, so it's pretty easy. Remove the shifter boot, unbolt the stick from the shifter stub. Make sure it is in nutrual, then remove the top cover of the transmission. Be very carefull during this step. There is a little spring and a tang in there that will fall in the trans if your not extremely carefull. Remove the flywheel access plate. Support the transmission with a transmission jack, and put a big piece of wood under the engine oil pan, and support that with a jack as well. Drop the driveshaft. Remove the tranny support cross member (takes longer than it sounds, and you'll find out why). Remove any speedometer cables and electrical connections from the trans. Remove the slave cylinder. Unbolt the trans from the engine. Roll the tranny jack backwards, sliding the transmission input shaft out of the clutch pack. Ubolt the presure plate (evenly all the way around as you go), remove the presure plate, and clutch disk which may be stuck to one piece or the other. Remove the flywheel. At this point, I'll have to turn it over to somebody who has actually done what you've asked about.

Mel, Thank you, now I know how to do it .
As I said before, it leak very little with no drops on the ground and the engine only takes 1qt every 3k miles. Now you know Me and with my luck it'll blow oil the time I get far enough from my house .

I think the rear seal part is ease, I read on haynes and it seem simple.
