Is it worth a look.. 91 ext cab 4wd 7.3l bad trans

Local craigslist has a 91 ext. 4x4 7.3 diesel up with 215k miles on it. Posting claims runs great but won't move because the transmission is shot. I don't know anything about the e40d (I assume since it is an auto that's what it is) but could it just be the electronic control module? I can tell the bed is a donor from the pics and would need at a minimum bed sides because one of them is pushed in. Looks like there is a little rust on the bottoms of the doors which means it probably needs rockers too.

$900.

Is it worth a trip to go look at it? Without being able to drive it at all, I'm on the fence. I'm looking for a project. This would definietly be a project. I would want to swap out the auto for a manual anyway.

What might be the really short list of deal makers/breakers?

It's worth looking at stand tall e4od are expinsive to rebuild around 2k from dealer. But at same time I bought a 93 with a bad e4od an I changed the fipl sensor an the trans Cooler an she runs fine put about 5k on it. Although she isn't aloud to play with trailers yet!

Don't tell him you want to convert it play that expinsive trans card to the fullest! An I mean that I bought my 93 drw for 1350$ yes 1350 with less than 110k an the truck is in mint condition I'm secod owner an I will bet money it's one of the cleanest perfect 93 drw out that's original paint an all hands down I'm positive. Has three dents an I put one there.

if you want it for a project truck and want to swap in a manual then i would say it's a good deal. other than SEVERE rust the only real deal breaker would be engine problems.

Thanks for the input. Does 215k miles scare anyone else? I'm not used to thinking in terms diesel age. Given that I would potentially buying an engine since its not driveable, is there anything engine wear wise that would be of concern at that mileage?

I bought my truck with 300k on it, a year later im at 310k and i have dumped quite a bit of money into the truck, none of it has been engine related.

I think of our engine like this. if it has 200k on it think of it as a gas engine with 100k would you still buy it. I think of it as a gas engine with half the miles on it.

This past summer I purchased a 1990 F-250 standard cab 4x4 with a bad ZF-5 for $385.00, just turned 200,000mi. Trans was stuck in 2nd gear, started and drove on my trailer. In one afternoon I swapped out the ZF-5 for a 4 speed I had laying in the shed. I have no fear of driving that truck anywhere, but I know my way around these trucks very well. You simply have to ask yourself if it is a project for you, since what they are asking for the truck is not alot of money. Only two months ago I purchased a 97 PS with 247,000mi on it from a salvage auction and have put some work into it. I overheated the E4od trans with the second load I hauled with it. Point being, what was a decent deal at the time just became an expensive project I am not ready to tackle. Hopefully I can fix it by Janurary. Good Luck!
