Hello everyone. Backstory, my 1990 F350 7.3 with an E4OD had a free wheeling and neutral out problem. Always hooked up in reverse and with the lever in 2 and 1.

If you search the last thread, I made probably over a month ago you will find a more detailed description.

Fast-forward, two transmission guys I spoke to said it sounds like something is messed up on the inside, so I went absolutely nuclear and tore everything out. The truck is pretty much down to the frame at this point. It goes to my local trans guy, which has been in business for over 40 years. He tears it apart from one end to the other and he cannot find a single thing wrong with it. It is an absolutely beautiful shape. Transmission is a aftermarket Jasper transmission.

I did buy a scanner before I went down this road and it did not show any codes that pointed to the MLPS but from the extensive searching and reading I have done over the past six hours it appears if that thing goes bad it might not throw any code but might be the cause of absolute shenanigans. Here are a few pics that unfortunately I did not notice at the time, but I’m guessing someone clearly had their hands in this wiring harness because I cannot make heads or tails of what is going on here, but it looks like this has been tampered with horribly. I understand there is an old style MLPS and a new style, and if you have a new style, you need to cut your wiring harness and solder in new connectors. I skinned back the wiring harness sheathing, and I cannot find any splice point. So I don’t know what is going on here. Does this look like someone just put a new end on existing wires and butchered it? Could I really have just gone through complete and total nonsense just because of a bad MLPS?

With the exception of my 2002 Ford Ranger with 353,000 miles on it and original 2.3 engine and automatic transmission, I have only had manual transmissions and for good reason. It figures the first E4OD I Ever owned is causing me grief. Never again. ZF5, ZF6, or Eaton Fuller 8LL or I don’t want the truck.

Please help! Thank you, everyone.

Disclaimer: cab was in bad shape and I have a rust free cab from down south so at one point I was going to get this deep involved anyway, just wasn’t in the mood to deal with this right now.

The E4OD can be a bit of a picky one to work with, but overall it's not that bad of a transmission. Just have to know where its key failure points are. As these things age, I've been seeing a lot more TCM failures, out of adjustment FIPL sensors and issues with the speedo not giving a good signal.
You're best bet is probably to get it back together, see how she drives, and work out the bugs after that.

From your pictures it looks like your plug end has been re-pinned into a "new" pigtail and they left the rubber seal and black plastic cap from the original one on the wires. They may have left them on there to keep them from getting the wires put in the wrong pin spot. I had to re-pin mine when I had the E4OD rebuilt and the put the upgraded mlps on it that has a different shaped but better(against the elements) pigtail fitting. Its always hard to tell what has happened to an old truck before ya get your hands on it.
