Is there a way to test the IP (not timing) for output (volume and pressure) while installed?

Couldn't find a reference, so probably not, but figured I'd ask anyway. :dunno

Yep, just takes about a 100 grand or so for a calibration machine.:D

That's a large part of what the charge is for when you get an IP rebuilt.

Ummm, just noticed the while installed part... don't think that can be done.

Ummm, just noticed the while installed part... don't think that can be done.

Weeeeeeell ok, but testing while installed can tell us if in fact it needs to be rebuilt before ripping it out of the vehicle, and that is what I'm trying to get at.

Just looking to get a diagnostic assessment of the overall health. I'll eventually get it rebuild, already have a u-haul spare for Mel, but don't have the turbo yet. In the mean time, was willing to check it to see if it's failing, ready to fail or if I'm good to go for awhile.

The MPG's thread got me thinking about this as I've now got a similar situation as another poster. MPG's have gone down steadily since installing the e-pump. The low end shift is getting bad after a short improvement since the e-pump. I'm going to change out the FIPL, it's the original black one, adjust it and see if that helps any. In the mean time, just wanted to make sure the IP isn't leaking internally or is making pressure within parameters without the time to remove, install, re-time and a bunch of unnecessary wasted time.

Hooking up a high pressure line to the pump's feed while the truck is running seems pretty simple to do, no matter how expensive the machine is.

Just wondering if it's a common practice for a diesel shop to perform.

Not expecting it for free.

The diesel comes out at really high psi - 2-3k. I guess you could pull an injector and leave it installed on a (really bent up) line if you wanted to watch it pop off (and make a huge mess) LOL

Also don't inhale the mist and MAKE SURE you do not get close to the pop off. At that presure the diesel can penetrate your skin and give you blood poisoning :puke:

Usually the IP is fine as long as it doesn't leak, keeps time, doesn't have heat soak issues, etc... The injectors on the other hand can dribble when not supposed to, leak, etc. Usually the fuel line will feel hot on a leaker as combustion gasses force their way back up the fuel line :eek:. Both items I've heard many times are a 150k mile-a-change. You can make a pop tester for injectors

I get all of the above.

I just find it odd that there isn't a "T" fitting capable of mounting in line with say the "1" injector to measure line pressure. Even with pulsing, like on measuring cylinder pressure, it levels out at a top psi. Easily done with HP lines in a commercial application..... measuring HP isn't a new thing in anything. A pop tester does the same thing for an injector.... you don't often see anyone cautioning about diesel surgery from pop testing, in spite of it coming out at 1800 psi. intentionally. Speaking of which, I need to do that too, pop test injectors.

I suppose that could tell you something, but it wouldn't indicate most common IP issues like lack of advance, and heat soak etc.

I had my IP rebuilt a 3-4 years ago luckily since it did have an issue. Otherwise, I think everytime I saw a puff of smoke I would think maybe it needed a rebuild.

I suppose I'm just looking for a pressure output. If it's within spec, look elsewhere type of scenario. A weak IP due to rusted/worn or scored innards(plungers, delivery valves...etc) might not put out good pressure.

Ford has a Rotunda pressure testing fitting in th special tol kits.. I really don't know what its supposed to connect to or what it tells you. Might be something to look into. I think I have it or some of the other members here have it in their special tool kits...:dunno You are going to need a large faced gauge of high pressure. Probably 5000 lbs will be a sfae pressure. These pumps can pump out that much pressure and yes... It can inject under your skin so being awhare of that is something we need to keep in mind working around high pressures.

Trust me, I get high pressure... I'm more worried about fire than I am diesel surgery.... done fire scenarios with high pressure diesel spray and the need to put it out..... fire = boat worst nightmare, flooding is a far better scenario.

I'll look into the Rotunda thing and see what I find... pointed in the right direction again. :thumbsup:
