IP bolts

What type of socket do I need to remove the bolts that hold the IP to the gear?
They have inverted torque bit looking heads that I can't find sockets for. Can someone enlighten me?

A 12 point hex-head socket will fit them properly. I THINK it's 5/16", but I can't remember for certain.

It struck me as a surprise too, since all I had were 6 point sockets when I did my IP for the first time...

I use a little 5/16 box end wrench. Works good for me.

Got 'em off, thanks guys. I ended up using the 5/16" box end and a hammer to break the locktited little ******** loose.

No need for the locktite. I've never used it, and never seen them back out.

Yeah, probably so. I imagine that whoever installed that rebuilt pump when my truck lived in California was the locktite culprit. Dang, they were tough to get out. Interestingly though, while pulling my engine over the weekend, I found a bunch of disturbingly loose bolts all over the place, like the intake manifold and valve cover bolts which had no more than a few scant pounds of torque on them. Definately not so good. But neither is the overall condition of the whole engine at this point.

Whew, my years of engine building says Loctite is a must on all internal bolts, either that or safety wire!!! Then of course most of what I worked on turned more than 3,000 RPM. I loctited mine anyway, to each his own I guess. I figure as much as these things vibrate, loctite would be in order.

There are however, different strengths of loctite. They may have used the high strength which states it will need heat to be removed easily. What I have that is high strength is red, the normal stuff is blue.

Whoa.....Easy on those valve cover bolts, same for oil pans on most vehicles too, they only get 72 INCH POUNDS. If you go cranking them down it bends the flange and can cause big oil leaks:eek: because it splits the gasket or squeezes the silicone sealant out if a gasket wasn't used....been there done that:idiot: and paid for my sin.

Loose (a relative term of course) intake bolts don't suprise me. They don't get torqued that much to start with, and it always amazes me sometimes how it seems that a lot of engine parts just stick together from having been clamped for so long from the beginning.
