intermittent rough start and idle

I've been driving my 94 IDI for years and I have never experienced a single engine hickup. But, this week I had a hard start; Cranked and cranked but didn't light off. I tried again with the throttle wide open and got it started, she went to a very rough idle. I revved it a bit and it cleard up and ran fine all day. 2 days later I had a regular start but straight to a rough idle again, which cleared up when I revved it again... It has full power and runs fine besides that so I doubt its a fuel fiter issue.
Any idea whats going on? I'd rather deal with it now then deal with a breakdown later...

The symptoms that you're experiencing make me think "air intrusion".
The fact that it clears up quickly points to an area close to the IP.
BTW: Nice truck. I daily drive its' doppelganger.

Do check the filterhead once inna while.
I pulled the valve stem cap off and out came the stem...
Still no air intrusion tho.

Those shouldn't come out with the cap. My guess is that it was loose somehow. I'd put it back in and keep an eye on it to see if anything happens.

I'd guess the IDI world must be pretty free of snowflakes. We have to be pretty manly and greasy to keep these trucks rolling.
