intake hat from Ats Work with banks turbo?

Unless I'm looking at out wrong, it doesn't seem like an Ats intake hat will Work on my banks turbo. I was just going to use that and a spectre filter, or "cone" filter. But when I put the hat up to it, it seems like the inlet or small opening on the intake hat is facing away from the turbo...any help much appreciated

install a intercooler is what i would do, that way you dont have to make up pipes to wrap around to the hat and you will get better performance with an intercooler,

We currantly only have the stock intake manifold for these idi engines. Sure, there are some custom made intakes but nothing we can buy off the shelf..

The hat was in great shape, but it turned the wrong way! I asked the list for help and received many intelligent, insightful replies. ;p

Russ (Typ4) let me know that he had the correct turbo hat in stock. A few days later, here's what I had:

Fits perfectly and turns the right way! They're brand new and if this is what you need, PM Russ. He'll take care of you. Oh yeah, they arrive unpainted. I bead blasted mine, primed it and shot it with Rustoleum Charcoal Gray to match the rest of the engine.

In the above first picture I see something just under the header flange that the turbo bolts too. It looks like a lifting lug on the intake manifold flange.. I wonder if that needs to be removed for more room to acess the turbo bolts and nuts...

You got it, Gary. One of the steps in the ATS instructions calls for removing that lifting lug and bolting down a turbo heat shield in its place. That was one of several trial fittings to see how stuff actually bolted up. The lifting lug is now history. Another issue: My heat shield is for the 088 turbo, so I'm not using one. All the hot side parts have been bead blasted and coated with Tech Line's Black Satin heat barrier. My glowplug harness and any other wires running down that side of the manifold and under the turbo will be wrapped with heat wrap. Some other members have pointed out that that's more than sufficient, so I'm going to try it. And keep my fingers crossed.

I have pictures of how i installed an ats hat on my banks with a spectre filter. Just had to make a short 90 degree tube to adapt them. Now thanks to the hat i was able to install a boost gauge!

Plan on using a donaldson 6637 soon but truck isnt running.

remember guys, cold air = more air.
under hood = hot air = less air.
cold air pre intercooler = higher intercooler efficiency.

these trucks don't have any GOOD places to get any significant quantity of ram air or getting real cold outside air without cutting things up. yeah cowl air is an option but it involves cutting a 4" hole in the firewall. some people don't like the idea of that. There is not enough room to run 4 inch piping down to the bumper cut outs. you could destroy the rad support and get some air from right behind the grill on the driver's side, but most people have a hard enough time keeping mother nature from destroying the rad support let alone a sawz-all.

i would love to box in my open element filter and them make a pipe to go to my cowl hole and possible some other place......................hmmmmm.......if all goes as it has been in my welding classes i should have a decent amount of time left over where i could work on something like say an air box. would be nice to have a worthwhile "air grab spot" besides the cowl to grab air from.

Cold air intake for us...
Move batteries somewhere else, at least passenger battery.
Run tubes to battery location and viola.
If you want colder, go to the fender and put a prefilter to keep mud/dust further downstream.

Restricted cold air versus slightly warmer air and plenty of it. Underhood temps By the front of the compartment arent probably that much higher at speeds. Would be interesting to find out real data though. Probably helps having this mild climate here.

The bumper cut outs on the intercooler bumpers might make a nice cold ram air setup if it was piped up to a filter
