There are a helluva lot of good tech articles in this forum, but a LOT of them are missing their accompanying pictures leaving the articles somewhat neutered.

I understand when Webshots went belly-up a lot was lost, but it'd be nice if the OPs would re-upload them to photobucket or something similar so they could be reattached to the corresponding articles.

Just a thought....

Yeah I agree.
So the pics have to stay in your photo album or a site like photobucket right?

some op may not have the photos anymore thus negating the option. If webshots was their repository of photos then originals could have been deleted.

just sayin....you may be asking alot of some well beyond what they can deliver...

There should also be a web based rule that you have to read all of the tech articles before posting on the forum. Kind of like terms and conditions.
A lot of information is missed just by the lack of will to read, and the good ole,"just hand it to me" way of life.

That's true, although I personally cannot fathom the idea of trusting a website as a sole storage space, but if they did and they're not available then that's end of story until someone can take new pictures. However, any are still around it'd help to restore the tech articles they go to. ;Sweet

In addition to photobucket Google has a free storage option. Doubt Google will go under in my lifetime

I remember when that happened, when Webshots announced that it would no longer be hosting pictures. Mel, I think it was Mel, posted that information in the forum. He warned everyone that it was about to happen, and what the result would be.

I went into a blind panic thinking about the possibility that we might lose all that valuable information. I started copying articles, pictures and all. I have a folder on my hard drive called "OilBurners Tech." It has 74 files. Are they all from the Tech Articles? I'm not really sure, but I think the chances are pretty fair. There are currently 82 tech articles in the OB Tech Articles section, if I counted correctly.

The format may be slightly different, they may not be quite as pretty, but it's there. As I recall, I did a simple copy and paste from OB to my hard drive. I would have had to manually type out the file name, so that may vary a bit.

If anyone needs a specific article I'd be happy to look, see whether I have it and can find it. If anyone wants to set up a (possibly duplicate) hosting site, I can send what I have.

Gandalf. I'll pm you a link so you can send those to me if you want. I can do any tweaks needed, convert them to pdf and put them in my dropbox.
Could also possibly upload the pictures again if a mod wants to go through and fix articles with images missing.

I do know that many that have contributed to the Tech Articles, and also other posts that have pictures, but were not in the Tech Articles have stated that webshots was the ONLY copy of the picture they still had, and apparently webshots made it much more difficult to retrieve pictures than it was to deposit it them. After some tried diligently and found it was futile to attempt to retrieve pictures from there, they just finally gave up. One thing to remember, there were A LOT of pictures these individuals lost that were personal family pictures and the like, not just the IDI pictures... Most got very disheartened with webshots "ate" all their photos and "memories" with one fell swoop. I would say unless there is a repository like Gandalf has, these pictures have been lost to the internet........

Uhgg. Memories of indigestion past. Yeah when webshots announced they were sold, they didn't do anything to help their users move their photos. We had to manually intervene, and I had so many up there, it would have taken forever to move them. Not only that, but all our links would have been broken, and everyone of those articles would have had to be edited. Sadly, it was a task for a team of people, and not just one person who already had a full time job. You can't just re-create in days what it took years of effort to build. I'm sorry the articles are toast. It is true, a lot of them are not worth much without the pics. Sadly, my originals are lost. Too many computer systems ago for the most part. It would be nice if we started to get those old articles updated with new ones.

Gandalf, if I can somehow get them folders from you, in my freetime, ( when I do have some) I can try and revive the tech articles.

I hate to add to the workload... but a stickied index might help. Yes... a few are hotlinked in the FAQ and intro threads, but a consolidated listing stickied on the main forum may help people locate them easier. Not to be too much of an ass, but the search feature here is sorely lacking, even using site:eek:ilburners.net in a google search.

In the SRT4 world we had a tech article listing stickied. It was very helpful, and they were categorized by engine, powertrain, interior, etc. They also included "need pics" if other members could help contribute.

In a way there is, stickied to the top of this forum's page there is a sub forum "IDI Tech Articles" where the articles are stored.
