IP = bull moose
BB injectors
Typ 4 built 093 with a WWII
boosting 7 psi
6 psi of fuel supplied to the filter head
1k cfm FMIC
timing @ 8.5*

all parameters have been close to the same on both engines.

with my last engine before I ID'd the catastrophic failure, the thing would smoke like a freight train when I got on it
may have produced 1 less pound of IC'd boost.

with my spare engine installed, and my fuel system swapped, it does not smoke unless I put a really good load on it.
I have not towed much with it. but im talking about starting out in 2nd in those akward " I shoulda down shifted" moments when you get to a light and it turns green.

the spare engine runs great, zero issues except I can tell I have a bad glow plug that popped up recently and has not been delt with.

just find it odd that im producing almost the same power according to my a$$ dyno, and less smoke.

I have not read my spark plugs yet :D

possible that im just running it more efficient?
fuel consumption is great, I have not gotten my speedo working yet, so MPG is unknown, but is apparently better than when I could produce clouds of blackness.

im not the "rolling coal" type, but im curious what you guys think.

Turn up the boost! 7psi is soooooo 5 years ago LOL (I'm semi joking, mine responded well to the wastegate being unplugged, drastic EGT reduction up high)

now that I think about it, my old engine without a torque cam smoked like a train too, but I didn't have a built turbo, just a clapped out 093. but it did boost 10 psi

I still need to dial the truck in, lots of things on the check list.. but I must get bed done first.

Wait, is the torque cam installed on this engine or not installed?

If you're making the same power without smoke, that's actually a good thing ;Sweet black smoke is just unburnt fuel...so, less black smoke and the same power means a more efficient engine ;Sweet

From what I remember he left the new cam in the old engine. My guess is that his butt dyno just isnt ultra resolute and the other engine is infact making more torque. But yes, likely a bit less efficient with the torque cam with the extra smoke.

no the torque cam was not put in this engine,
this engine was one of the few I had torn apart to inspect for the truck build.
the pistons had some dings on it, but I decided to throw new head gaskets on it and put it together.
not even a valve job.
but the truck had 90k on it, but lots of idle time.

it could also have been the fact that I had a vibration I couldn't figure out until I did the tear down.
so I never pushed it past the vibration.

however I now have a new-to-me turbo block! that actually looks pretty promising.
after work is done this week, ill be tearing into it and sending the block, crank, and rods to get checked.

may take an N/A crank and have it turned all depending how they mic's

like the warden said; black smoke doesn't equal power because it's not fuel being used to propel the truck.it's going unburnt.this is why the engine running cleaner, feels just as strong (or close) to the one that was killing mother earth!:D

You remember my truck Brian? And that was with 11 psi boost lol. Glad you got your truck sorted out. I'm looking forward to seeing it soon!

Regarding smoke. For this discussion, grey is smoke - mostly burned - , and black is soot - just warmed up a bit.

I have an 84 E350. I replaced the gas 460 with an 89 IDI - both had/have E4ODs. At 11.5K feet on I70 in CO, it made so much soot that it obscured the big rig behind me, and would produce soot whenever I lugged it down.

I also have a 2001 7.3 PSD. It is the same size as the IDI, I assumed Ford properly sized the PSD, so I put a 7.3 PSD turbo on the IDI. There is no room on the engine in an 84 van, so it is on the frame at the rear of the transmission.

I have not seen soot since. I get some grey smoke if lug it, and a lot if the scavenge pump is not running. And, I am running one gear higher on hills. And it hardly ever gets above five pounds of boost, but even that makes a huge difference.
