Got an Oil Gusher, Black Gold, Texas Crude,..all from removing a Glow Plug,..?

Before we pulled my motor I wanted to do a compresson test on it to see what I need to fix on the motor to make it useable. 2 of the glow plugs that I pulled had oil gush out of the holes.

Compresson on one of the holes oil gusher was 80 .
1 was 125
3 were 320 to 380
the others were 250 to 300 (I am going by memory, we wrote it down at the shop and I am home now)

The motor was cold and had not been fired up and ran for about 3 weeks.

I knew that the motor had a dead cylnder and a lot of blowby when I ran it last year.

Any idea what would cause this? Oil rings went bad?

Have you ever seen this before?

Probably just wore the heck out Darrin. Bad rings maybe a cracked piston to have that much oil/blowby and thyat low fo compression. Probably gotta pull it apart and see how bad it is. Probably would be worth a few hundred for a core as is.

Darrin, where is the oil going---exh or intake?

Quite possibly be a cracked piston and the cooling jet is pumping the oil thru.

Reminds me of a mess I made last year with a 60 series Detroit. It came in because the jakes weren't working properly.....I pulled the rocker cover off and checked it out....Didn't see anything wrong so I fired it up and had Jim watch the housings for me....As soon as I flashed the 14L pig up the oil was spraying everywhere including all over Jimmy...:rotflmao ......We found our problem, a gallery plug in #3 jake housing had come out ad the oil was pooring out of it steady.....Made a big mess in a short time.:rolleyes:

Valve seals gone, just dumping oil down in there while cranking for testing the previous holes. Bad rings. Stuck rings.
If it's been sitting a year my money is on the valve seal or the stuck ring.

Also, was it all oil, or a mix of oil and fuel from a slobbering injector?

That would make sence, but I removed all of the glow plugs, then did the compression test. It spewed out of there when I removed it.

It was all oil because theinjector pump is removed.

so is the 7.3 that came from another that was installed when the head lifted on the other??

That is correct, it has a lot of blowby, and one weak cylnder ever since I installed the motor.


I will be pulling it apart but it wont be till I get the Cummins Conversion done. so for now it will just sit in the shop.

Seems like more exh than intake but I am betting on bad or stuck rings.

It was a jasper reman with 10K on it but it sat for a while so a ring may have stuck from sitting. It never cleared itself up since I installed itlast year.


Tomorrow I will post the actual compression numbers.

What happened with the last motor? Was it just HG's, or was there other damage to the engine?
